Habitation Velier Hampden HGML 2010
Here's the surprise: for a 62% Hampden, the glue-and-solvent side stays in check and the fruit runs the show. Reviewers keep landing on ripe pineapple, banana, marzipan and papaya, with soft vanilla and well-integrated oak underneath. Tropical aging shows — several call it the roundest, most harmonious HGML they've had, and it holds its own against the C<>H many taste it beside.

How does Habitation Velier Hampden HGML 2010 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Intensely fruity, beautifully balanced Hampden Repeatedly named a top tropically-aged Hampden and a favorite Mai Tai base. Intensely fruity with polished esters; the only recurring gripe is a finish that fades a touch quickly.

For me, still a touch before the C<>H, although that can be justified m.E. only exclusively subjective and is dependent not least on the form of the day. How much better tropically stored Hampden still goes probably remains to be seen - but for me this is definitely already absolute top class.
Review by cigares
A complex of fruits on the nose, supported by solvents with lots of not quite ripe pineapple. Other tropical fruits rather ripe and almost fermented, and a little pastry/marzipan side. The palate is surprisingly soft for the ABV, but intense on the fruits, well present and lively. The finish is very long and ends on a Tutti Frutti with quite delicious candied fruit notes! It leaves a taste of cherry kirsch and coffee with a great effect.
Review by DomM
Even years after its release, this is still a true benchmark for tropical Hampdens. For me this is clrearly ahead of the 2010 single cask with 12y aging. Amazing HGML. In fact this is - alongside the HV 2010 C<>H - the best tropically aged Hampden I tried so far. Brilliant bottling.
Review by Serge
Wow ... really very, very tasty. A real cracker. Update: in a duel against the 6y0 hgml Spirits in the sky, it defends its throne of the Hampdens. Fuller-bodied, warmer and less acidic Tasted again and still delicious. The taste also keeps very well in the opened sample bottle.

One of the best ...❤️ It is and remains the reference for me. HGML is the brand that excites me the most, whether neat or in a Mai Tai. Super fruity with lots of ester power ... Marzipan, Anna's papaya. In my opinion, the tropical aging is perfectly noticeable here.
Review by Dr.Django
Today we have the absolute Champions League in a glass: Warren Khong Hampden, HV HGML, HV c<>h 2010. In comparison, the Warren Khong comes across as almost relaxed and elegant, very easy-drinking. The HGML is the fruitiest, incredibly intensely fruity. But my clear favorite is the C<>H, the most intense and with the longest finish. Three absolute top rums! My ranking here hasn’t changed over the years.
Review by Christoph
Papaya and strained banana on marzipan. The feeling when the rum reaches the mouth is a true orgasm of the senses. Lots of fruit, slightly candied, dance up and down on the tongue and do not want to disappear. The fruit notes continue deep into the palate and are wonderfully rounded off by wood and tannins.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A phenomenal rum that creates a sensation on the nose and palate. The aromatic power of Jamaican funk is evident on the nose, with overripe exotic fruits and esters, solvents, varnish and glue, followed by notes of marzipan, spices and vanilla. The attack on the palate is a thing of beauty: the balance between fruit, phenolic notes, wood and spices is perfect. The rum has a fat, full texture, and is extremely greedy and round, without the slightest aggressiveness on the palate. The finish is long and dry, with tannins and spicy notes adding to the fruit and esters. A superb rum that marvelously combines power, aromatic complexity and finesse.
Review by Mirco
Intense Hampden with classic HGML profile. On the nose, ripe pineapple, banana, and solvents stand out, accompanied by light vanilla and tropical freshness. On the palate powerful, with dense ester aromas, sweet fruit, and well-integrated wood. The structure is clear, lively, and deep, an impressive rum showing the full potential of Jamaican pot-still distillation.
Review by Giorgio Garotti
Together with the Hampden from the Warren Kong series, this remains my favorite among the rums from this distillery that are entirely tropical aged! It's intense and funky just enough, and in its own way, it has a great balance of flavors! One of the few Hampdens I would pour myself again into the glass!
Review by Benoit Mahe
The nose is typical, with solvents, glue and esters mixed with tropical fruits (pineapple!) but not only (apple, cherry). The whole is fermented. The palate is frank, fruity and acidic. Esters and tropical fruit dominate. Unctuous and full-bodied. The finish is oily and evolving (passion fruit, esters). Quite simply, an excellent Hampden.
Review by Leo Krüper
Against the HV HLCF tasted. Comes to me somehow not quite as horny rüber, can also not say exactly why. Seems set and relaxed. Not what I expect from a Hampden. Nevertheless, of course, brute tropical part. HLCF I just like better. Will get a 2nd chance.
Review by Sebastian Kornett
Nose complex, even more happening in the mouth. Simply awesome stuff! Very good Hampden. I prefer the tropical aged ones among the High Ester variants.
Review by Adrian Wahl
What a nose and what a taste. Just a brutally awesome thing. Tasted against the HD Rare Cask HGML and the “standard” HV HGML, it’s simply worlds better. Plus, it’s also my absolute benchmark in Mai Tai. Just AWESOME 🇯🇲

A very nice surprise indeed. This is a well balanced and complex rum despite its age. The proof has been well integrated though it's there. Some may prefer a drop or two of water. The nose is wonderful and there from the start. I let it rest for close to 30 minutes after which there was even more flavours. Typical funky nose with overripe fruit and ester with a bit of wood. The palate is equally nice with a minty touch on the fruitiness, complex and well balanced with a touch of oak. The finish is long and warm with esters and raisins and again a slight touch of wood.

High-Ester Hampden straight from the picture book. On the nose, the familiar aroma spectrum but surprisingly delicate for the ester power with gentle vanilla, candied fruits, some marzipan and without that extreme buttery note. On the palate, of course pineapple, esters and incredibly dense with a great maturity after 9 years and nicely integrated alcohol. Behind the first wave, the delicate aromas from the nose return as a thick syrup. The finish has smoky-grassy curry leaves and perfectly integrated tannins. I admit that High-Ester doesn't get much better, but for me the charm has somehow faded - I don't want to drink pineapple juice every day either.

An outstanding Hampden. Perfect ester level!

Admittedly, the HGML is also a pretty blatant candidate, the basic character compared to the C<>H are very similar. However, everything is so much rounder, more harmonious and overall so much better. I really like it here, the fruitiness and spice are pretty well balanced. This is definitely something you can pour yourself from time to time

9:On the nose, esters and glue, nail polish, fermented, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red fruits with strawberry, citrus fruits, briny olive, tea, roasted wood notes, caramelized, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, cherries join, vinegar, some spiciness and marzipan, the molasses is sweet with honey, herbaceous, flowery. 9:On the palate, the attack is funky, intense, but full-bodied with esters, glue, fermented, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, mango, red(sour cherry, strawberry), citrus fruits, like a marmelade, roasted wood notes with burnt sugar, meaty, spicy with allspice, vanilla, anise, slightly smoky with phenol, as the molasses is vegetal. 8,9:The finish is long, dry and slightly tannic, oily, with esters, overripe fruits pairing roasted, smoky, spicy wood notes.

One of the very best recent Jamaicans.
Review by RumTaTa
Nose: WOW! Just poured and the whole room already smells like pineapple and nail polish! Palate: lots of fruity sweetness, again grilled pineapple and marzipan, very intense, alcohol very well integrated Finish: dry and fruity at the same time, no olives or brine like often with Hampden, which I really like, lingers forever on the palate This is a textbook Hampden! Anyone who gets the chance should definitely try this rum.

Edit: got some more. This remains my HGML No.1 Franconian Tasting Gang goes Tiki The notes I found again say it was probably the total knockout. That will probably be true.
Review by Portman
Excellent fruit compote notes with soft sweetness, a bit of menthol, and a whole lot of funk! Warm, long finish.
Review by Thunderbird
What more can you say about the HGML... perfect balance!!! Simply good!!
Review by DutchRumPirate
This is one of the tastiest Hampdens I've tasted. What a delight. Along with the HV 2010 C<>H, this one is also a top choice for me. The HGML is possibly even better. The nose is wonderfully fresh, sweet, fruity, and complex, and this also comes through beautifully on the palate. A delightful explosion of flavors, yet not too sharp. The finish is wonderfully long and full. This is quality, and I'm glad I got to try it.
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
Surprisingly delicate, when it hits palate there are some wood notes, tannins, but soon after it turns very fruity and sweet. Very much a pineapple, some strawberries. Subsequent sips I got a bit of chocolate and marcipan. After a while it kind of tastes like a nice Long Pond. Great stuff, need to compare side by side with HLCF. Thanks Jury for the sample.
Review by Vincent D
An extremely concentrated Hampden. Everything that makes this series so good is here: esters, funkiness, pineapple. And that crazy fermentation sensation. Intense, complex, fruity, evolving. Really good.
Review by tojo
Nase: Tropische Früchte, Vanille, Lösungsmittel und eine angenehme Süße von Honig und Marzipan. Gaumen: Kräftigere Noten von Gewürzen, Frucht und Holz. So muss ein Hampden riechen und schmecken!

Great Hampden! With fine acidity on the finish...

So far the best Hampden in my opinion.

I haven't tasted many HGML mark rums, but here we go. Very fruity once you open the bottle, but lets wait for a while and see how it opens up. On the nose: Mild intensity on the nose and i believe its typical for HGML mark. Nicely round and notes of overripe pineapples, light esters, light glue and light sour cherries are integrated together. Abv is integrated very well. My nose is telling that this should be good. Taste: My nose was correct, it is a very good rum. First we have intensity with overripe pineapples, fruits, esters and nice sour cherries. Then you get little bit of vanilla and woody notes in the background notes. Nice full bodied mouthfeel. Finish: Esters, pineapple notes, light spice and woody notes. Mouthfeel is slightly oily at first, but it gets dry in the end. Excellent full bodied and balanced rum. I really enjoyed sipping this rum.

This is the first time I get to taste this one and I would love to own a bottle of it. 😋
Review by Buddudharma
The best tropical Hampden I know. For me, clearly ahead of the C<>H, which is a bit too brutal for me. Here the esters form a wonderful combination with wood and the other notes, this balance is what makes the rum special. The rather low amount of acidic components is also positive to highlight.

If I’d have to choose one Rum, that would be my choice. 1996 Last and Rhum Rhum Liberation 2012 Integrale coming close, Mhoba 2017 as well. But this one (because it’s the best of Hampden - in my face) or the Mhoba ( it’s my profile) would win

On the nose, it's an explosion of fruits coated with vanilla and marzipan. On the palate, the tropical and exotic fruits become fat and almost candied with wood and tannins.🤤

Ester Baby... I like

What length.. It's breathtakingly indulgent with this varnish, this glue, these fruits

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums

Another bomb, a big slap of esters and aromas in the mouth... what a treat 😍😍😍
Review by Alexander Rasch
An absolute Hampden highlight as it has a perfect aroma balance and a great texture. The ester is spot on and the alcohol perfectly integrated. Compared to a young C<>H in the glass, I think the tropical ripeness simply makes the difference here. Creamy on the palate. Great rum that makes the very old continental Hampdens look old. The TECA 2005 is still ahead for me because it has more complexity and a more exciting profile. Both absolute highlights.

One of the best Hampden, 2010 habitation, with c<>h on par
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
What a punch, with a heavy but complex and indulgent rum, a hell of a profile, all power and mastery!
Review by Harald
Color: amber Smell: Immediately funky, sweet with strong ester aromas and tropical fruits. Pineapple and mango, sandalwood as well as vanilla and fudge. Smells extremely delicious. Taste: Sweet and fruity in the mouth with vanilla, then alcoholic and spicy. A flavor explosion when swallowing. Creamy, oily and intense. Tropical fruits (mango), esters and lots of vanilla, fudge and caramel. Spicy with some sandalwood and oak. Round and super tasty. Finish: Very long. Still sweet and fruity with esters. Spicy and woody. Remains pleasant and delicious, even in the aftertaste. Conclusion: I love this rum. To kneel down for. A real highlight from Hampden.
Review by mick
The aromatic framework of the hgml is quite different from other marks, basically it's a Hampden that might not be one, the glue/polish marker is subdued, which allows it to express itself without the chemical solvent side that often overwhelms the rest, this selection is just brilliant top 5 Hampden for sure, only the H Warren could dethrone it.
Review by Henry Davies
Nose here we go, all aboard the ester train. It’s hard to see what else this could be, hogo, fruit and caramel. Boom, let’s go. Mouth is great, layered, not an in your face ester monster and so much complexity and layers. It’s a stonker. The finish is medium, and that’s about my only criticism, fades a little bit quickly and the front of the finish is thin. All together a helldorado of a rum, everything you want in a Hampden. Exceptional
