Velier Chamarel Indian Ocean Stills 2014
Opinions land all over the place on this one. The nose wins almost everyone over: mirabelle plum, vanilla, a cognac edge and grass that one taster called the most distinctive he'd smelled. The palate splits the room. Some get caramelized cane, tropical fruit and roasted cedar; others find the alcohol sharp and not fully tucked in. A few wished for more time in the cask.
- Expressive plum nose
- Agricole-style fruit

How does Velier Chamarel Indian Ocean Stills 2014 taste?
Aggregated from 51 community reviews.
Beautiful nose, slightly hot young palate Lovely, expressive nose of plum and cognac, but the palate divides people. Many feel the alcohol sticks out and the rum is too young; gorgeous to smell, less settled to drink.

This rum was spectacular in the way that the nose was significantly different from the palate. The nose is light and elegant with tropical fruits, grass and some vanilla. The palate on the other hand is fruity with a warm touch and a lightly smoky wood flavour. The finish is fruity with chocolate and a very light pinch of barrel. Price to quality is very good.

Beau produit.

Wyrazny podmak anyzu. Pieprz, krotki do sredniego finiszu.

For me, the best rum from Mauritius so far, but still with room for improvement. While the planty aromas dominate the nose, the palate shows a colorful mixture of caramel, fruit and notes of young wood. There is an alcoholic note (Cognac or Williams pear), which suggests that a little more time in the barrel would have done this rum quite well. In my opinion, good and with typical Agricole notes (although not a "real" Agricole), but not good enough for the price.Edit: Nose >> Palate

On the nose immediately rises the smell of vanilla, accompanied by a note of cognac, further develops mirabelle and a hint of anise. On the palate, young wood dominates at first, the rum spreads warm and slightly bitter.... there is some anise and pepper. The finish remains the young wood and earthy grass!A good rum, but not very complex.

As you would expect from the score, not a real highlight ... but not too bad either. Stone fruit and apple with aniseed, vanilla and vegetal notes as well as some wood and tobacco. A little too alcoholic and rather nothing you would need a bottle of (even if it is quite nice itself)

Clairement pas une réussite, c'est dommage.

Etwas zu alkoholisch.

Sehr leichter Rum.

A nose of mirabelle plum where I find the alcohol very present. In the mouth I find the alcohol too present and not well enough integrated. I'll try to leave it aired for a while to see if it needs it.
Review by Jakob
Not bad, but a rum too expression- and profile-less. Could probably have used a few more years of storage - especially in the mouth, the alcohol still stands out noticeably even after some time in the air, the rest of the bouquet is pleasing, but too interchangeable. A pleasing drop, not a highlight. There are more interesting from Chamarel, although at least so far primarily rums of comparatively younger age (and also rather rarely in barrel strength) are bottled there.
