Made for anyone chasing that classic Caroni "workshop" character — tar, rubber and bicycle-inner-tube up front, then dark chocolate, mocha and tropical fruit (banana, pineapple) underneath. One taster nailed it as an old tanner's workshop with tar bubbling in the corner. At 64.5% the alcohol is big but mostly well-integrated. Most agree it needs air to open up. Intense, oily, dirty in the best way.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Classic, very good 98 Caroni, only the somewhat present alcohol causes deductions in the B grade. Apart from that, an absolutely convincing bottling, even if it doesn't reach the very highest levels.

Tasted at the restaurant and at the first RumX meeting. A surprisingly soft nose with tar, walnut and old leather that has been sweated in. Tropical fruits and a pastry side. A nose deeper and more pastry-like than the Sponge #10. The palate is also quite soft once the alcohol bite disappears. Still that old leather and a bit of tar. You feel like you're in the Middle Ages in a tannery workshop with tar boiling in a corner. The finish is long on smoked wood with licorice-like notes. You can clearly taste the tropical fruits, especially banana and pineapple. A rum that takes you back in time, I really like it. Maybe not the best of Caroni but an atypical rum where the workshop is not mechanical but that of a tanner. To be compared directly with the Sponge #10, it is deeper, rougher but also more pastry-like. Two very beautiful expressions from 1998. Retasted and clearly better with oxidation.

Powerful Caroni with intense notes of tar, oil and rubber, accompanied by dark dried fruits and some tobacco. The structure is dense, the character dirty, but not overpowering. Despite its power, it remains surprisingly easy to drink. A bottling that confidently asserts itself in the classic 1996 style.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Had a nice Caroni tasting yesterday and this was the starter. Nicely balanced and intense with the traditional Caroni flavours. Needs to rest for a good while to hit the optimum balance between flavor and ABV.

A caroni in all its dark part! In its aromas where the fruit is very present in the tasting part it almost disappears and that of tar, wood and caramel emerges with a nice toasty and smoky note very pleasant! The extraordinary thing is that it is never bitter and there is a wonderful balance between all its aromas! Very nice intensity!

9:On the nose, strong roasted wood notes with nuts, caramel, chocolate and leather, intense industrial accent with tar, rubber, tropical and citrus fruits, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, tons of sweet pastry come out, the barrel impact is strong, dark chocolate and berries. 9:On the palate, the attack is intense, but round with charred wood notes like butterscotch, biscuits, nuts, slightly smoky, industrial notes with tar, molasses brings licorice, flowery touch, as the fruits are dried and citrus. On oxidation, tannins arise, some anise and mocha. 8,8:The finish is long, less balanced, tannic, as roasted wood notes pair tar, petrol, yellow and dried fruits.

Classic 1998 Caroni with plenty of tar and rubber, both tropical and dried fruits, lots of wood, a bit of smoke as well as mocha and menthol which is especially still very present late in the finish.

Fantastic, I remember it like it was yesterday. Update: I was finally able to put my nose back in after many years, still just as good, well-balanced Caroni with that dirty side that doesn't take over, red fruit, lots of camphor, a nose I can't get enough of, which comes to confirm my first love for this rum that opened the door to this world for me over 10 years ago.

A very nice Caroni with the great Werkstatt notes. I especially liked it on the nose. Almost everything is right here and the rum is intense and strong. It stays long in the mouth and shows a nice warmth. Delicious.
