CDI Jamaica Navy Strength
Most people land in the same spot: a friendly, fruity way into Jamaican rum that's surprisingly soft for 57%. Expect ripe banana, esters, spice and a licorice-tar edge, with the alcohol mostly tucked in. Newer drinkers call it "a very nice entry level Jamaican"; those who've tasted deeper funk find it a bit thin and sharp, wishing for more punch.
The community says- Soft for 57%
- Ripe banana, funk
- Keep in mind: Alcohol reads sharp

16.09.2025 Retasting and it's still pretty good. ------------------ 07.05.2019 Enjoying some samples at home. Colour Light in colour. Nose Fresh, light funk, fruity, banana, light raisin, light floral, spice, light roasted. Palate Light, round, faint wood, fruity, light banana, spice, light ester, light bitter, medium intense, light caramel. Finish Medium to long, round, light roasted, light wood, faint chocolate, light licorice, fruits. Needs to rest in order to really open up.

After week or two, something happened with taste. Now it tastes like really bad moonshine for punishment. First tasting - rating 78. I wonder if it just this bottle or all of them.

Note: Employment at Perola GmbH (spirits industry), partial professional involvement with evaluated bottlings. All reviews are my personal, unpaid opinion. Nice navy strength Jamaican. Great value for money and surprisingly mild for the young age and 57%. Very complex and a nice introduction to the overproof Jamaica world! For me one of the best affordable Navy Jamaica rums.

A more interesting nose than the Latino and the Caribbean with more fruit and less sweetness, a side of rum grapes.A mouth with vivacity but a very well integrated alcohol. A light funky and some esters. A finish and an empty glass with a taste of Mezcal.interesting and a good surprise.Tasted again with other Jamaican and still disappointing.
Review by Stefan Persson
Bought and emptied a bottle of this rum, a blend of distillates from several Jamaican distilleries. It’s the same rum as CDI’s regular Jamaican at 43% at a higher ABV, which makes both scents and flavors more noticeable. The nose is fruity, herbal, flowery, spicy, medicinal, funky and a little pungent with scents of banana, licorice, polish, esters, acetone and turpentine. At the palate it’s fruity, flowery, vegetal, sweet, spicy, salty, funky, pungent, citrus, elderberry, grass, olives, licorice and esters. The finish is medium long.

Jamaican with unbeatable price performance. The nose does not quite pick me up, has a little too strong Agricoleanlänge for my taste, but on the palate awaits a beautiful Jamaikablend with a pleasant sweetness, which is also super as an introduction to higher-proof and ester-containing rums.
Review by Insta: spiritofbernard 🇫🇷
Esthers medium on the nose with a pastry side almost cereal, I still do not have this side banana on ripe so typical of Jamaicans. On the palate, the milky smoothness gives way to a licorice bitterness before finishing on fruits. At 50 euros it is a sure value.
Review by Eugene227
A good introduction to stronger Jamaican rum without overwhelming you with intense funk right away. Ripe banana, pineapple, esters, vanilla, and spices are at the forefront. Compared to intense Jamaicans, despite the 57%, it lacks a bit of depth and punch. Overall, though, a solid, characterful Navy Strength with good value for money.

Not bad, but there are so many other better Jamaicans around these days. Today was the last drops of this rum as I need the space for other bottles
Review by Nicofr
A fairly young Jamaican rum with a fruity taste and a lot (perhaps too much) of power. I think that for a Jamaican, the alcohol could have been better integrated, but at this price level it's still a decent rum.

8:As you bring the glass to your nose, prepare for an aromatic journey. Powerful scents of creamy soda, fried banana, dried mango and fruit bread greet your senses. White pepper adds a subtle but invigorating kick. With each nosing, the complexity deepens, unveiling notes of raw sugar, hay, hints of white chocolate, and a delightful banana cake essence. 8:The palate experience is a revelation. Despite its robust alcohol content, this rum maintains a remarkable smoothness. It exhibits concentrated flavours, showcasing a gentle bittersweetness at midpalate. Revel in the rich taste of banana peel, fruit loaf and a sprinkling of white pepper, some vanilla. A fresh, grassy, herbaceous and pineapple zest, citrus infuse the midpalate, followed by a lingering embrace of warming sweet spices, a pinch of salt. Smokiness is present. 8:Finish is quite long, tropical, ripe fruit, pleasant sweetness. Compagnie des Indes Navy Strength Jamaica Rum is a testament to the art of rum-making. Its complexity is balanced and harmonious, never overwhelming the senses with excessive sweetness. Edit:28.3.25, few cents higher, not bad at all, 24.10.25

Not the overloaded Jamaica rum, but also a decent load of aromas that I associate more with Guyana: roasted, leather, wood. Unfortunately not balanced enough, a diverse sharpness or spice in the mouth/finish disturbs the enjoyment. Also hints of chemicals. There are certainly better Navy Blends.
Review by Lutz Lungershausen
Tasted again after a long time. Powerful, full of contrasts between fruity notes and heavy, tarry aromas - beautiful, classic navy with a long, developing finish. 04.2024 First impression: Fruity, interesting Nose: tropical fruits, esters, tar, rubber ... navy strength ... this is what I imagine the hold of a cargo ship to be like Palate: the 57% dominate, followed by fruit again, a little wood, maybe smoke Finish: short and dry in the throat, a little longer on the sides of the tongue Conclusion: dig it out of the shelf again more often

The price-performance ratio is unbeatable. Here you get a lot of Jamaica for little money
Review by Johannes
worthy Park dominates here. Unfortunately, it still has peppery citrus/juniper notes, which I find somewhat disturbing.
Review by Godspeed
In my quest for a decent navy strength I had a tasting of this one while I was out rum shopping. Not super impressed. It’s pot still and apparently won some award back in 2015 but the taste is pretty mediocre. Too much sharpness, almost like a youngish column still jamaican and the alcohol is not particularly well integrated. The TCRL 2013 Jamaica Navy is better, smith & cross is better, and if you want a demerara flair to your navy strength pusser’s gunpowder is also far better. There’s way better options than this in the navy strength category.

The nose is that of a blend that should combine a Jamaican rum (I'd say Worthy Park) and probably a rum from British Guiana. Nice nose of fruit, esters and wood. On the palate, it's first spicy, then fruity. Nice, but the alcohol is a little powerful and the rum quickly becomes flat. No length. Nice in a cocktail, I think.
Review by Banana Joe
Great blender, but it also knows how to impress on its own. Absolutely great PLV. One of the best I've had in a glass at this price and age. Alcohol very nicely integrated, incredibly mild for 57%. CDI proves that it doesn't always have to be rum for a few hundred euros.
Review by w00tAN
Top Jamaican with Navy Strength. Good to drink neat for me but also great for mixing! Especially the pronounced banana on the nose is unique to me.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
Perfect introduction to the Jamaican style. All the classic flavours are here. Funk. Good!
Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
On the nose, there's no doubt that we're in Jamaica, with its ripe bananas and notes of esters aplenty. Other exotic fruits (coconut, etc.), menthol-solvent freshness and vanilla are also present. The nose is rather encouraging. On the palate, the attack is frank and pleasant. Less tropical fruit, more candied fruit and citrus zest. But the funkiness of Jamaica, licorice and a "medicinal" effect are still present. The finish is quite successful. There's still a nice woodiness on the palate, spices and eucalyptus.
Review by Schnapsschuesse
On the nose Jamaica entry - banana, ester, fruit and a bit medicinal. On the palate surprisingly mild for the 57%. Wonderfully dry, lots of banana but subtle funk. Difficult if you know more - but a very nice start.

My RumRatings review from 5 years ago: The nose starts off with a lot of alcohol and the glass should definitely be left alone for about 30 minutes. Then wonderful ester notes with ripe fruit come through. Especially banana. There's also a bit of glue. The ester notes are intense but not too intense. That makes the nosing fun. On the palate, the rum is a bit sober. The 57% chase a clear sharpness in the mouth. The ester notes are not so dominant. Clear bitter notes linger. It lacks a certain complexity. The fruit is recognizable but very restrained. In the finish, the bitter substances remain and shape the whole picture. In the aftertaste, the ester notes come back a bit and stay. That earns a plus point. For 40 euros, a solid rum if you like strong tannins. I would rather recommend the Worthy Park Single Estate bottling. With 45%, it brings more funk than this one.

No big difference for me compared to the more diluted one. The extra proof does it good, a bit less sweet and less woody. It's better but meh +
Review by Winetrader
Smells of fire, very long on the palate, airy. A very interesting and refined rum.

Good mixer. Good strength. Also enjoyable neat. Very decent for the money.

It lacks a lot of things.. not amazing for a Jamaican. No real interest except for beginners to discover.
Review by thomas fraboulet
Distilleries Worthy Park + Clarendon, aged 5 years. Similar to Smith&Cross, a bit less tropical but more rounded and better sipper. Smell is really good and spiced, taste is tropical fruits with a lot of spices, finish is rather short with Spices but overall well integrated. Better sipper than Smith & Cross, fine in cocktails but lacking that oomph and funk that we expect from a Jamaican
Review by Pavel Spacek
... Hampden, legendary Jamaican distillery that besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery you can sense wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruit - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".
Review by YoukiPassion
A good quality-price ratio, nice.
Review by Patrick M
Strong, full-bodied drop. Already very alcoholic on the nose, powerful, estery, and a hint of honey. In the mouth, a real powerhouse. Insanely strong and alcoholic. You really have to get used to that first. You can still taste the tropical fruits. For me, nothing more comes through. In the medium-long finish, burning, spicy, funky. After a while, a nice overripe fruit note emerges. Overall, a nice rum. Definitely not for beginners but rather for advanced drinkers.
Review by Hogshead
If you're looking for a Jamaica rum with a medium ester profile, you should be pretty happy here. I really enjoy it – it's another step on my journey through the wonderful world of Jamaica rum with all its funk. And the best part: despite its strength, it's surprisingly easy to drink and simply delicious.
Review by Onkel_Ig
A very tasty Jamaican. On the nose, fruity notes of yellow fruits, banana, pear, peach. On the palate, these notes fall behind the distinct alcoholic note. Fruit, leather, wood remain on my tongue. All in all, a nice drop, but for me the alcohol dominates too much and the funk moves into the background.
Review by Fabulon
Very pleasantly surprised! Quite complex despite its young age. Ideal for those who want to discover Jamaican rums. Excellent quality/price ratio.
Review by Montana
A fruity smell, slightly alcoholic like whiskey, a bit of caramel. The taste is slightly bitter, somewhat alcoholic, later becoming sweeter. Still fruity throughout. The finish is medium length.
Review by ilRummista
A discreet Jamaican, but I definitely wouldn't buy it again despite the price being quite reasonable. Nose and palate a bit alcoholic.
Review by Nico NLD
Powerful nose where banana dominates, with a touch of yeast. On the palate, the fruit remains present, but the strength of the alcohol quickly overpowers the flavors. However, there is a certain sweetness. The finish remains powerful and long with a return of banana. After some evaporation time, the alcohol dissipates and the aromas strengthen. Reminds a bit of the Extraroma from Arcane.
