Savanna Collection Métissage Maputo 2003
Most owners land firmly in the fan camp, and the reason is the Armagnac cask — it drops raisins and dark grape right into a heavy Savanna base of oak, cocoa, roasted spice and coffee. Powerful and dense, with a long warming finish. The one recurring gripe: at 64.2% the alcohol bites, so give it a long rest and a few drops of water before it opens.

Really cool how much Savanna & Armagnac harmonize. Lots of wood, lots of spices, some glue, red chili flakes with dark chocolate raisin, pink grapefruit, red grapes and baked banana, as well as dark chocolate cookies. The finish is also a little bitter, astringent and with lots of tannins and glue, menthol and overripe banana and strong mocha, as well as really dark dark chocolate. Alcohol is very well integrated and really fun to drink. Very drinkable for a Savanna! For me, this is definitely the current benchmark when it comes to Savanna in an Armagnac cask.

A comparatively roasty Savanna representative, which in my opinion speaks for the exciting range of the distillery. Apart from that, in addition to the roasted notes mentioned, there is primarily some fruit, wood and vanilla sweetness from the cask. Good, but not a Savanna that I would want a bottle of.

Excellently traditional with a perfect Armagnac finish! Very tasty.

A deep spice takes center stage, carried by strong oak. There are dried fruits and raisins, accompanied by dark chocolate, cocoa and roasted spices. A fine balsamic menthol note provides freshness. Very concentrated and intense, with a long, warming development.

fort dauphin #989: This bottling is something for collectors. The search for aromas during tasting is extremely difficult. Candied fruits, a bit of fruit yogurt, very light on the palate with a short finish. The alcohol is not well integrated despite the low ABV. wild island #985: Good fruity start with some wood and candied light fruits. Fermented fruit in the finish, also pastry and fruit yogurt. Great mouthfeel and a nice medium-long finish don’t hide the comparatively restrained aroma intensity compared to other great Savannas. Big sips are a lot of fun to enjoy here and less so when looking at the wallet. 84 points wild island #984: Weak start, fermented fruit, clearly more than in Cask 985, but also much less fruit and volume on the palate. The finish is also relatively long and the absolute strength, here the cask shows through a bit. 85 points. wild island #987: Similarly weak as 989. A bit woodier and more bitter than the colleagues from the tasting. Cognac/armagnac in the finish very distinct. The finish is absolutely great and lifts the rum to a whole new level. Might have guessed an Agricole blind here. I like it. 83 points madras #496: Yes! Awesome stuff! From the nose to the start, it gets a bit thin in the finish (complaining at a high level). A very good balance between fruit and wood, wonderful mouthfeel. Sure, the comparison to the colleagues is a bit unfair since this is a good Grand Arome. I love it! 89 points Maputo #988: With associations to Cask 987, only much better. Everything more intense and better balanced. Great rum! 87-88 points

A superb Savanna from one of the most recognizable series the distillery has launched. The nose is particularly concentrated, with beautiful woody notes and spices that are perfectly interwoven in the juice. Notes of licorice, nuts, grapes, cocoa and dark chocolate accentuate this aromatic intensity. The profile is relatively dark and heavy, but very elegant. The attack on the palate is particularly intense. There's a high concentration of roasted notes and spices (pepper, vanilla, licorice), which heat up the palate, but always with finesse. The influence of Armagnac casks, grapes and citrus notes of tangerine and grapefruit can be detected. Tobacco, caramel, brown sugar and dark chocolate complete this particularly dense profile, where the alcohol is very well integrated. On the finish, the rum is subtler and sweeter, but with a fine aromatic imprint of oak barrel notes, spicy chili and vanilla, and darker aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco and roasted notes. There's a slightly bitter, herbaceous edge that goes well with tea, dried fruit and grapes (thank you, Armagnac). A Savanna in the image of its label: powerful, majestic and imposing.

Together with DomM, a few Savanna were tasted today. Many thanks to Johannes for the samples. The biggest disappointments were the RX232 and the RX11264. My personal favorite was the RX9608. The RX11034 and the RX11515 just managed to get over 8 points.

Komplex with heavy aromas on the nose. Intense with spices, cacoa, lots of dried fruits. I think the Armagnac did some nice work here. Very nice. On the palate tastebuds very thick again. Creamy texture again with dark and intense flavors. You can taste the long tropical again again with some positive influence from the armagnac. I would even call this a bit „dirty“. Very nice bottling.
Review by Skyfly
A very roasted Savanna that perfectly harmonizes with the Armagnac finish. Pleasant dried fruits meet rather darker aromas like coffee, dark chocolate and nuts. Besides, the already mentioned grape probably contributed by the finish.

An exciting good Savanna

Nice robust nose. Definitely raisin and an extremely delicious aroma. Really a punch on the palate. Wonderful depth. Great for sipping and a long-lasting finish. Adjusted upwards in the night tasting today.

Tasting of a 3cl sample. Aerated for one hour. 👃 Dark, concentrated, aromatic woodiness. Armagnac cask, gingerbread spices (cinnamon, star anise, cardamom), cocoa and bitter dark chocolate, cooked vanilla, caramel, crystallized honey, licorice, dried walnuts/hazelnuts. Of course dried fruits with these alcohol-soaked raisins, dried orange slices and a bit of toasted apricots. A fleeting herbal note, cardamom responds to dried mint leaf. A little polish touch and camphor note passes and disappears. I find many similarities with grape brandies from Hontambère or Château de Laubade, distilled between 1980-90, baco and ugni blanc grape varieties. Dark, balanced, complex profile. The kind of almost perfect nose. 😋 A palate perfectly matching the nose. The Armagnac wood brings its share of winter spices and cake, a well-present empyreumatic character with cocoa, roasted coffee beans, caramelized sugar, toasted nuts. Fruity flavors on raisins, then in the background dried mango notes, acidity on citrus, bitter orange and kumquat. Dry tannin warmth. Maybe the alcohol degree is a bit sharp, but clearly it serves the boosted flavors. ⛳ Very long, sharp, warm, spicy, bitter spicy cocoa, golden caramel in the pan, coffee beans, Armagnac cask, raisins until the end, bitter and candied orange. Herbal finish on black tea leaves, dried infusion leaves. 🏆 A very good traditional rum with a perfectly mastered aging in ex-Armagnac cask. This cask strength combines with panache the austere typicity of the Armagnac terroir with the intensity and aromatic concentration that makes Savanna famous.

Savanna Maputo Wild Island 2nd series. This is a traditional rum, so molasses-based, with tropical aging for 16 years refined in cognac barrels. It is the twin brother of Savanna Fort Dauphin but the comparison stops there as their profiles are so different. The Maputo has a much higher alcohol degree (64.2 degrees). It is my favorite Savanna regarding this 2nd series because of its uniqueness. I am not aware of a Savanna with a profile so close to some Guyana Skeldon or Enmore. Indeed, once the solvent notes pass after good airing, notes of caramel, coffee and chocolate dominate the debate. A fresh and fruity note of grape balances everything. In short, this Maputo is a real favorite and is part of my top 3 traditional rums outside of grand arôme that I have tasted at Savanna.

From the Metissage Collection tasted Fort Dauphin, Maputo, and Madras: Madras stands out for me, also because it is the only one of the three that is simply much more intense as a Grand Arome, with wonderful red fruits and butter pastry on the nose. With the other two, I have a lot of grape and wood with the Armagnac finish. The Maputo is a bit too alcoholic on the nose for me with its 64.2%, I find the Fort Dauphin diluted to 44.8% almost better. Unfortunately, that doesn't work equally on the palate. There, the Fort Dauphin seems rather thin.
Review by Johnny Rumcask
Good traditional rum, but strongly influenced by the Armagnac cask. The rum needs a very long resting time to open up and to handle the alcohol. The rum tolerates water to open further.
Review by Pavel Spacek
Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-heavy ones like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't tasted so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.
Review by Djehey
Maputo, a lion... That's quite a fitting image. In many ways, it reminds me of the first traditional Velier Isautier. For me, at this strength, without esters or freshness to balance the intensity and heaviness, it's a bit too much. But I do recognize a quality DNA. I'd prefer it reduced, Fort Dauphin I believe?
Review by EUDIER Vincent
Complexe and pleasant nose swift dark… but less complex mouth A nice final, elegant, evaporating to something open and fresh.
Review by xasmx
This just isn't opening for me. The nose is harsh and needs quite a bit of time. A bit of water calms it down somewhat. On the palate, get petrol and a lot of bitterness that pretty much kills it for me. I'm sure to revisit as some point, but at this point it's not for me. Not a fan.

Okay :D I can’t explain, but this one tastes like red color. It is sensual but wild. Savana just can’t be a miss. There is some tar at the end. I also feel jelly cherries from Haribo. Grapes, licorice too.
Review by Solidfunk
Clear aroma of apple skin. Kind of uncanny really. Some plum for sure. Pours maroon. A lot more wood in the mouth. Some sugar plum, cacao fruit, hot pepper. Plenty of dried fruit. Long finish. Doesn't give me that typical Savanna fermented pineapple vibe. Intense. Sample shared by xamsx.

Crazy finish with a lot of spices.. You can really feel the woodiness and the armagnac.
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Armagnac well present, dried grape, spices, a dry and astringent woodiness, but the alcohol is quite frank on the palate, a pity, it feels younger than it is.
Review by Mentalo
Lots of roasted notes, spicy, partly bitter. Hardly any fruit and the alcohol could be better integrated. Not my preferred Savanna profile.
Review by RumTaTa
The nose is strongly in the direction of bourbon. I don't perceive the typical markers of the distillery so strongly. Very barrel-heavy on the palate. The finish is also unsurprising and of medium length. A little disappointing overall.

One of the best savanna traditional rum ❤️💪
Review by Kevin Sorensen 🇩🇰
This one needs to stand for a long time before the ABV stops biting on your nose and on the palate it also bites so I added some water after which it opened up a bit. I'd set the ABV integration on this one to really poor and I usually really like Savanna but this one is out of character.
