Velier Beenleigh Fine Australian Rum 2015
Ripe Williams pear runs through this one from nose to finish — so much so that a few members joke it could pass for Calvados or a fruit brandy. Around it sit citrus, glue, vanilla, floral rose notes and young oak. At 59% it starts sharp, but 30 minutes of air tames the sting and lets the fruit bloom. A distinctive young Australian that rewards patience.

The intense pear and apple notes are reminiscent of Calvados. The alcohol is not ideally integrated at first - but after 30 minutes of breathing, a beautiful, fruity rum develops that is really fun.

2015 / 2013 / 2006 side-by-side from the freshly opened bottles. While I have to admit, that Australia isn’t my favorite origin, the both younger bottlings really aren’t my cup of tea. Rather sharp and alcohol forwards. Citrus, apples, pear are dominating. Same is true for the 2006. Here the overall balance is much better, however. While the 2006 is enjoyable, I’m no fan of the younger one. That is from the open bottle. As with past experience in this side-by-side, the Bennleighs improve significantly after a couple of weeks in the opened bottle. 2013 and 2006 show much more rich fruits and a more balanced profile with significant less sting. Easily +0.5 points after some oxidation. The 2015 just remains underwhelming. Better than before but still sharp and not really pleasant imho.

Australian Rums Tasting, Rum Club Switzerland and Australia Advent Calendar 2025. Great sweetness on the nose, vanilla, cedar and dried fruit. Elegant but not striking. The palate is soft on entry, then the aromas come to the fore, cedar wood and dried fruit. The finish is medium-bodied, with the dried fruit descending fairly quickly and the oak/vanilla lingering for a long time. An easily accessible rum with aromas that are too dry for my taste. There's little complexity here and it also lacks generosity. Tasted again and it seems less balanced than I remember.

Cactus juice and pear juice. Apple and pear in nose and taste. Could also pass for a fruit schnapps. Not my cup of tea.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Gigantic nose of glue, pear, jasmine tea, lots of citrus fruits and almond cookies! Much more floral & dry on the palate like the Finespirits beenleigh 2015, but still nice notes of almond cookies and tangerine peel, Williams pear, some glue & honey but also more wood. I like it but it's not as drinkable and easy sipping. But still incredibly complex and exciting. Probably the best young Australian to date. #needmorebeenleigh 🪃🇦🇺🐨🦘🌏

A rum that offers something interesting for its age. The nose is dry, lively on spicy and woody notes but with quite a few fruity notes that contrast (pear, grapefruit, orange, apple). One can distinguish a very attractive floral touch and glue, caramel, almond and somewhat roasted notes. The profile is young, rather direct and plays fair with the nostrils. The attack on the palate does not beat around the bush and offers a nice fruity dance (orange, pear, apple, dried fruits) with the indulgence of bourbon and caramel but also the warmth of spices. There is a dry and slightly vegetal side on the palate that gives a bit of relief. The alcohol is well integrated, but the whole lacks a bit of depth. The finish is of a correct length, invoking a dry and floral side, but also a warm, spicy and woody facet that turns on roasted notes, leather, dark chocolate, nuts and almonds. The fruits appear briefly. A nice rum that allows discovering Australia from another angle.

Somehow not really my rum right now this Beenleigh. I find it somehow quite alcoholic. Otherwise, it is rather on the fruity side, with citrus fruits, dried fruits, and tropical fruits. A bit of vanilla, that's it :)
Review by Skyfly
Positive, very fruity surprise. Above all other aromas, you taste pear from nose to finish. Alongside, light spices and floral notes. From the palate, young wood comes in, as well as a sweetness I can't define further. Alcohol is well integrated. Second tasting as part of Arturs Advent calendar: -2 points

This is a wonderful rum especially thinking about the price tag. I like that the spices are present from nose to finish. The spices are topped by fruits and light wood notes. There is a light floral and roasted not in there as well. It was sold out pretty fast and I understand why.
Review by Joachim Guger
Very fruity (apple, and especially pear) and floral on the nose. Then some chemistry and then spices (licorice and especially juniper). I like it very much. Chemistry and pear in the mouth. Crisp, alcohol well integrated. Nice nose, interesting this dominance of pears. The palate is only moderately pleasing.

VSGB 😘Nose: after the first alcoholic sharpness has faded, this Beenleigh comes across as fresh and fruity as usual. Foremost I find juicy pear and green apple, maybe some grape. In addition, fresh lime. Behind that, a full vanilla note. A lovely floral rose scent follows and slightly milk chocolate at the back. Palate: also fruity, but much more tart than on the nose. Pear comes in briefly, then bitter grapefruit and lemon zest predominate. I find a touch of clove and something metallic towards copper. In the finish slightly bitter and then again the, for me typical, Beenleigh pear.Solid drop, for me a bit too tart on the palate.

8,3:On the nose, roasted wood, oily, spicy, with chocolate, nuts, buttery, some glue, citrus fruits like orange peel, tropical fruits, flowery molasses with rose, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, sweet, caramelized roasted notes arise, smoky, vanilla and dried fruits, pears, some rubber. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is creamy, sweet with roasted wood notes like toffee, butterscotch, chocolate, nuts, spicy vanilla, allspice, the molasses is vegetal, black tea is present, flowery touch with rose, as the fruits are tropical, yellow, dried, citrus, with omnipresent pear. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry, slightly tannic, with toasted oak notes pairing dried, citrus fruits, pears and fresh, vegetal, grassy molasses. Edit:27.3.26

On the nose: Citrus and fruit forward. Quite mild even for a that level of abv. Taste: Pear dominates. Citrus and spices. Vanilla is in the background. Little bit of orange peel. Creamy mouthfeel. Finish: Pear. Little bit of vanilla and pepper. Quite dry. Barrel notes at the end. Medium finish I feel like this rum certainly lack of body and stronger flavours. For a such a young and high abv rum its quite boring.

Australia advent calendar from Artur: Powerful Australian with crisp spices, wood, citrus fruits, underlying sweetness of caramel and honey. Still shows some youthfulness but already surprisingly balanced.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
A somewhat untamed beast. A bit closed in the mid pallet. A drop of water helps. Sandy/mineral. Some currants/green grapes. Some burn. Obviously young rum although desert(?) aged. It's all good but it lacks something. Too much hidden flavours, could use some spunk/funkiness. I need to try this a few more times to get to the core of this. Second tasting: pencil shavings. Still somewhat lacking in the mid palate.

It's good, nice length, but it's not the rum of the year either.
Review by Rare Akuma
Initially pretty unexciting, but leave it to breathe for 30 minutes and the boring calvados aromas subside and get replaced by beautiful flowery notes and a unique popcorn sweetness. The taste is very black tea forward. Sparse on fruits, but strong on flowers and vanilla. All the way to a minty finish with a light anise undertone. Smell the glass after finishing to find renewed popcorn and spice, as well as a surprising cola note.

Tasted together with the Velier Beenleigh 2006. I still like the 2006 a little better. The 2015 is clearly more floral on the nose, while the 2006 has notes that remind me of Calvados.

Three years later sine last tasting. Yummy this is still relly good.

In a small hut in Sweden this fruity rum landed in a glass. Besides the often described apple and pear notes, I also find a bit of dark chocolate in the aftertaste. On the nose besides apple and pear also candied gooseberry. Overall quite alcoholic, but an hour on the lift takes away the initial sharpness.

Second tasting: Still good, today I noticed a similarity in smell and taste to grappa aged in oak barrels. The alcohol is moderately well integrated. ----- On the nose, nicely fruity and intense. The first impression in the mouth is fruit brandy (Williams pear), then come the citrus fruits and then the spice. The spice continues in the finish and is complemented by barrel aromas. The barrel aromas last very long and then the fruit (pear) flashes up again. Very interesting rum with nice smooth transitions. I like it!

Very surprising.a strange nose, stuck very present, a little spice, wood and some fruit. In mouth it is a floral explosion on the other hand. Superb, with a power, a little pepper and fruit that underlines that. A very present rose and that doesn't let you go any more. Beautiful finish, long, powerful and always with these notes of roses.

To close the year, another Australian. Very fruity on the nose. Not at all on the palate. Very creamy and lots of bourbon. Reminds me of cream candies. The finish is woody with lots of pear. ABV plays well. After 30 minutes the creaminess disappears and it gets even better.

An excessively floral rum. Not my thing.
Review by Henry Davies
An enjoyable rum, big mouth feel. Fairly young and it comes through in the flavour but well balanced, some pencil shavings and woody notes from the barrel. First Beenleigh and look forward to trying more
Review by Johannes
Really well balanced! Great rum ! Alcohol very well integrated, banana, ester.

Cross-tasting of the three Velier releases (06, 13, 15) The release comes across medium-strong on the nose and reveals a somewhat broader profile on the palate, with the aromas lingering long in the finish. The aroma palette reminds me a bit of a port or liqueur wine, you have to like it, classic notes of raisin, almond, caramel or orange. For me the best release that evening.
Review by Martin Spooner
Nice pear-fruity nose. The taste nicely leans towards Calvados. With a hint of almond. A round, complex drop. Definitely let it breathe a bit, then it's a dream. The finish is also already harmonious. A nice rum for mild summer evenings. Confirmed in the night tasting. No change.
Review by tojo
Besides fruit and spice notes, floral notes also come through here. Not unpleasant.

A solid Australian rum with unique pear in aroma and taste.

Compared to this one, the Beenleigh from The Rum Cask noticeably has more power and spice.

Nose rather restrained, you have to give it some time. Fruity profile, leaning strongly towards green apple and cherry. There is a tangy strawberry note. Also found are dark chocolate, woody and vanilla. The palate is powerful. The rum takes over the palate without asking. The profile is particularly spicy, and it grabs the taste buds with its firm woodiness. The palate is less fruity than the nose, and there is a robust side that was not expected from the nose. The spicy finish is very long and slightly astringent-metallic. We are dealing with a tasting rum, not really a daily dram. Personally, it’s not my thing. But I will especially remember this beautiful spicy length. So, I’m not disappointed to have missed this bottle during its sale!

This is a rum that I come back to as one of my favorites. From the nose to the palate to the finish, this rum has beautiful complexity that lands for me in the space between strawberry/cherry licorice and black licorice.
Review by Alex1981
Jamaica in Australia? Only with apples & pears instead of tropical fruits. Needs some time to open up, but then a nice complexity develops. Still a bit rough, hoping for the 15yo to take it up a level. But already very enjoyable!
Review by El Peludo
Powerful, lively, molasses, pleasant, quite dark, woody and fruity.
Review by Miloš Gruškovský St
Color: Golden, amber. Nose: Fruit, apricots, citrus, slight lacqueriness, overall reminds me of the scent of an open box of crayons. Taste: strong, spicy pungency, orange, vanilla, gentle resinousness. Finish stronger with a spicy aftertaste, stronger warmth with lingering spicy pungency on the tongue.

Vintage 2015. With 8.0 out of 10 it's a very good bottle, though not top of my ranking.
Review by Leo Krüper
The youngest of the 3 Veliers. And really, really not a good rum. Neutral alcohol with a watery, dull bitter note. Maybe it's the desert storage or me, but I can't find anything here that would make me want to drink this rum again.
Review by zabo
Tasted the three Velier Beenleigh from the good little bottles together with DomM. My first impression was that not everything that says Velier on it is good. If the St. James range was already a flop, the Beenleigh range follows on seamlessly for me. Maybe I just don't understand this profile or have no taste, but they were all too alcoholic for me and had a bitter (not pleasant) aftertaste. The 2006 was slightly better than the other two, but not by much.
