This is a solera blend built on old Panama rum: vanilla, caramel and toffee up front, smoky toasted oak and dried fruit underneath, with a warm spicy finish that turns syrupy at the end. 8,5:On the nose, the first attack is with smoky wood and tobacco, along with a hint of minerality. It's complex, well balanced. We could find some walnut, orange, brown sugar, vanilla, sweet spices and some notes of pepper and olive.The wood is toasted and charred. It becomes dry after an aeration when dried fruits are also more intense, as tropical fruits arise. Some coffee might be noticed... 8,7:On the palate, the attack is nicely sweet and supple with smoky wood, tobacco and orange. After some tasty pastry with honey and toffee come into the play, the mood is dry, molasses is dark with licorice, fruits are dried. Spices are sweet. 8,6:The finish is long, woody, dry with nuts, toffee and dried fruits...

Got this sample in my second batch from Rum Ratings Tasting Club and participated in the virtual tasting yesterday. It’s produced from molasses in a multi column still whereafter it’s aged in Jack Daniel’s barrels using the Solera method. The oldest drops is said to be 30yo. Overall it’s very smooth but a little too sweet for me (hydrometer tests I’ve read indicates 27gpl of sugar), I should probably liked it even more with a little higher ABV which should balance the sweetness.

👃🏼 = Rich aromas of wood, coffee, caramel followed by orange, nuts, and vanilla.. 👄 = This sweet cocktail is found on the palate with nougat, chocolate, a lemony note with a decent length, a bit oily and sweet. Here we have a blend of quality old rums for the general public wanting to enjoy without risk and without looking too much at the price.

This is a blend of rums of up to 30 years of age and a very good one I may add. The winner of the 2011 Best Rum at the Golden Rum Barrel Awards. I just enjoyed this one again and it's never a disappointment. Very full bodied rum with a beautiful nose and complex palate. The finish is long, warm, spicy with smoke and just keeps on giving.

The smell of this Abuelo immediately after pouring strongly reminds of citrus fruits with orange/orange peel in the foreground. This aroma quickly fades and increasingly turns into oak wood along with vanilla. Taste-wise it is very interesting. Freshly poured again the citrus/orange notes. These also fade like on the nose to oak wood. There are also aromas of sherry/port wine. The sweetness reminds of maple syrup but is not as present as in the younger bottlings. All in all a very good rum that can be called complex. At the same time, the mouthfeel is still soft and round. One could call it a grown-up and matured PX Cask from Wagemut.

The color - dark brown and red The nose - sweet caramel woody toffee and caramel The taste- well its sweet, round with quite short aftertaste… Well I am glad that I have only sample..it’s good for syping but I would be full of the taste after few glasses.. I am not fan od this rums - i can’t distinguish between this rum (quite expensive and for example Zacapa - well it reminds me Zacapa Armonia)

Very tasty, but a little too sweet. I also expect more than sweet, tasty rum for >€120... I miss the unique selling point a bit more here. Overall too comparable with various other Spanish rums...

Quite a good sweet rum… Easy to drink, to read. I’m very disappointed by the mouthfeel (light, small body, but delicious) and taste… I expected much more from this one! *Update: New rating! Definitely the best of my 3 samples (12, 15 years and centuria)

Abuelo Centuria – 40% Still at Varela Hermanos in Panama. Created to celebrate the house's centenary, this cuvée is based on a blend of rums aged up to thirty years in Jack Daniel’s bourbon barrels, using the solera method. On the palate, you find sweetness and complexity, with a decent finish for a Ron. Without being dazzling, this anniversary cuvée still stands out in this first part of the tasting.

Very round representative of Panama with a beautiful nose of vanilla and chocolate. A natural sweetness and great spiciness in the mouth. The long finish is warm and spicy. Also a recommendation for rum beginners and as a nice sipper.

It comes in a beautiful dark brown color. On the nose round, fine woody, vanilla notes. Taste-wise initially a vanilla-caramel bomb, then it transforms into mocha notes, fine wood notes accompany it in the background. Long aftertaste with orange at the end. Great rum

Rumy Abuelo I had, or rather I used to like very much. This particular piece is a blend of variously aged components, the oldest supposedly thirty years old. This shows very intensely in the smoky wood in the aroma and taste. Only the whole thing is unnecessarily too sweetened.

Tasting at the bar. The bartender gave me a dram as a gift. He told me on the house this is my favorite rum. I said thanks and smiled politely. Very sweet. There’s a bit of an issue with the sweetness. In the fruity profile of Panama, it comes out a bit off. Tart. Fruits. Lots of sugar, caramel, chocolate. You really feel it for me and it doesn’t matter that the youngest whisky in this blend is 30 years old. Very nice! But nothing more. It was hard to give it above 7 but I compromised with myself.

[German Rum Festival 2026] The Ron Abuelo Centuria is a wonderfully balanced, dark Panama rum. Plum, raisin and ripe apricot meet vanilla, caramel, cocoa and roasted nuts. Then come tobacco and lots of mature oak, which counterbalance the distinct sweetness with some seriousness. I especially like its calm, velvety character – no fireworks of aromas, but a rum to lean back with. The very long, warm finish makes the glass dangerously cozy. Compared to the Abuelo XV Tawny Port, the Centuria feels much more 'mature' to me: less port wine fruit, more old wood, tobacco, cocoa and nuts.

Rarely does the taste far exceed the smell. But with this rum, I feel exactly that. The taste is clearly stronger and longer-lasting than the smell suggests. Very spicy in a pleasant way.

A birthday tasting at a local restaurant. It had a hint of caramel aroma with some toffee mixed in. Both carried over with the taste. Just a little burn, with the oak coming through at the end.
