The surprise here is how much smoke pushes through — unusual for a Caroni, and it splits the room. Tar, tobacco and rubber sit on a dry frame, with a little vanilla and cherry underneath. Fans call it a rounder, "continental" Caroni that never offends; others miss the dirty, oily complexity of the great 1998s. At 62.1% the alcohol shows, and the finish runs shorter than you'd expect.

Round, continental Caroni that doesn't offend anywhere. The dirty notes are missing. However, some smoke does come through, which is unusual. However, it is fun and was affordable at the release price.

A somewhat unusual Caroni. Lots of alcohol at the beginning, which is not so well integrated, then light wood notes, smoke, few typical Caroni notes, some vanilla. The finish is surprisingly short.

11.06.2021 A nice evening with some friends at the beach bringing some nice rums. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Light wood, faint smoke, spice, faint rubber, workshop, cherry. Palate Balanced, light wood, faint tar, light rubber, faint smoke, raisin, light cherry, spice, faint coffee. Finish Medium to long, light wood, faint smoke, rubber, medium dry, light coffee, faint cherry.

A first nose smoky, spicy and fruity with lots of wood (young wood and barrel), vanilla and old varnish. Then all these aromas balance out and the nose becomes exciting. The palate is tight and tannic but in a good way, with the fruits developing afterwards. A frosty side like in the Caronis from the "Hangar" series which I quite like and which adds a lot to the mouthfeel of this rum. The finish keeps this frosty note and all the other aromas end in harmony. Once again a very nice selection from Kill Devil for a Caroni single cask.

Quite smoky Caroni, which overall is rather on the dry side. Tar, tobacco and smoky notes dominate. Alcohol present, at the same time the aroma spectrum lacks a bit of complexity and expressiveness in direct comparison with the 1998 Caronis. Not quite my world.
