T.D.L Kill Devil Trinidad Fernandes 1999
Made for drinkers who want their Trinidad rum dark and dirty. Tar, wood, leather and mocha lead, with coffee and cigar smoke running underneath and just enough dried fruit and sweetness to keep it from turning grim. At 61.5% it bites early — a few drops of water and some air settle it. Several tasters call it an underrated cask worth decanting slowly.

Independent Fernandes. I don't like licorice, but here it's done really well. Charred barrel or slight overlay to the actually shallow rum. But it fits here. Thanks Michael for the leftover bottle. I like it.

Nose: Roasted, dark notes are very dominat. Significantly different from the TBRC Fernandes. Palate: same again. Dark and roasted notes, some sweetness. Reminds me nothing of TDL but rather of a South/Middle American Spanish style rum. Again: very different compared to the TBCR.

In itself a good TDL with well-integrated alcohol, but if there wasn't a part of the cask maturation at least in the Scotch whisky cask, I'll eat a broom... Unfortunately, that gives me a lot of deductions...

Très bon, agréable en bouche, ce côté fumé, boisé, tabac est intéressant

toasty smoky barrel notes, mocha and leather are blatantly dominant. A profile that I like, but others may find it too violent.

Beautifully balanced, exciting rum.

The nose is floral and buttery with hazelnuts! But also fruity: lemon-mango! Some sweeter and woody aromas stand out. It is successful and charming. In mouth, it is dense and smoked! We find the fruity of the nose, lime and spices. The whole is enhanced by a touch of vanilla. The finish is slightly astringent. The length is more than respectable on the charred wood! Nice TDL rather complex and fun to deconstruct in tasting. I regret this astringency which penalizes the greediness of this rum. Very nice before moving to more aromatic profiles!

On the first nose, it's quite closed, some tropical fruit and a little apple with a dark edge. Gradually, cigar smoke appears and thickens. On the palate, it's quite dry and rough, still lightly fruity, with a smoky edge. The latter lasts quite a long time, almost reminding me of a whisky finish fut. I regret the lack of smoothness and slight sweetness found in some good tdl. A little too dry for my taste.
