Rum Shark Uitvlugt 1999

Pour it neat and give it a minute — this is a sipper, not a mixer. Continentally aged Uitvlugt in the classic mold: herbal and minty up front, licorice and anise, bitter lemon peel, black pepper and clove, with a metallic copper note running through the nose. Light in color, oily on the palate. A few tasters find it a touch soapy and rough, but most call it a very good, honest cask-strength Guyanese.

The community says
  • Herbal licorice notes
  • Long oily body
  • But: Slightly soapy

It smells similar to Jamaica but the taste is different, I remembered Nectar of daily Dreams and it's Guyana. Some of the flavours are similar - a bit of medicine in there I feel...Very good rum - even my wife has tasted it twice.

I've had the sample for so long and am only now getting around to it... Nose: quite typical of Uitvlugt, spicy-roasty, slightly burnt with lots of lemon. Sweet-tropical with passion fruit and delicately spicy with cardamom. Green banana and metallic copper on the finish. Delicate and rather subtle on the nose, the age of 20 years is not yet noticeable. 8,2 Palate: powerful and burnt-spicy. Immediately an intense taste of soap in the mouth. Bitter lemon peel also goes well with this. Slightly salty and peppery with plenty of clove. You don't notice the age here, as it is hardly woody. Overall a little flat and too soapy for me. 7.6

I got a chance to taste this one right at the source, right at the nice little ,,coffee,, shop in Prague, whose owner is one of a guy who bottles these rums. Extraordinary for me. Minty, soft sweet. Nice rum.

A bit too rough on the palate, very smoky. The rest is a lot of classic continental aged Port Mourant profile, unfortunately overall a good a piece away from the top representatives of continental aged Uitvlugts.

Somewhat atypical for a Port Morant. Too many herbal notes for me.

Uitvlugt

Avg Rating 8.5/10 over 170 Rums

Uitvlugt is a ghost with the best reviews in Guyana. The distillery closed in December 1999 and its stills were hauled to Diamond, leaving the stillhouse in ruins, yet aged Uitvlugt rum is among the highest rated on RumX, with one Cadenhead 1964 reaching 9.9/10. For four decades this was the transfer point where every wooden still in the country waited before moving on.
