Savanna Collection Métissage Madras 2007
Sip this one slowly and neat, with time in the glass — it's a cask-strength Grand Arôme that rewards patience. Expect a fruit explosion: overripe strawberry, pineapple, sour cherry, plus the classic ester funk of varnish and green olive brine, with roasted wood and spice underneath. One taster called it an "esterbomb" that makes the whole room smell of it. Big, salty, complex.
The community says- Explosive tropical fruit
- Deep ester complexity
- Keep in mind: Salty olive brine

Funky, fruit-bomb Grand Arôme at cask strength A loved Savanna Grand Arôme — hugely fruity, funky and complex, with the 60% mostly well tucked in. A few find the olive brine and sour edge too much; not one to drink casually.

Awesome Savanna Chai Humide! Super creamy, buttery, intense with violet, overripe strawberry, fresh crispy peach crumble & pineapple, olive brine, a bit of mint, green tea & brioche pastry/croissant. The finish brings a crazy amount of violet, almost perfumed but still awesome. Pornishly delicious & mega complex and harmonious! Chai Humide is just awesome. In a direct comparison, the Etang Sec is just a bit ahead here. The alcohol could be a bit better integrated in this one.
Review by Mirco
Very spicy and powerful, with a pronounced woody note accompanied by clove, pepper and nutmeg. Dark dried fruits, raisins and a hint of tobacco appear. In the background, slightly balsamic and mineral hints provide tension. Overall complex, dense and with a long, dry finish.

I love it! 89 Maputo #988: Mit Assoziationen zu Cask 987, nur wesentlich besser. Alles intensiver und besser abgestimmt. toller Rum! 87-88

Very good Grand Arôme!

Beautiful representative of the Grand Arôme world of Savanna with a classic profile, which, however, in direct comparison with the very large Grand Arôme bottlings of the distillery can not quite keep up. Instead, there are even more rough edges here, but they are a little to the detriment of the balance of the individual flavors.

Mmhh genau nein Fall. Sehr Fruchtig würzig Blumig in der Nase ein Hauch Menthol/Minze macht ihn leicht Frisch . Am Gaumen Erdbeeren, Mango Papaya Ananas... leicht Pfeffrig etwas Röstaromen und Kakao (dunkle Schokolade) . Gefällt extrem gut.
Review by TheRhumhoe
An expressive Savanna with a lot of intensity. The nose reveals notes of very ripe red fruits (strawberry), yellow and tropical fruits as well as grapes. The olive is also very present, with a medicinal and salty side. The wood, spices (vanilla, cinnamon, pepper), and caramel complete the details of a very worked olfactory profile. The attack on the palate is rich and powerful. The very ripe fruits of strawberry, cherry, pineapple, and peach form the spearhead of the palate profile. We find the olive, toasted wood, spices, as well as notes of coffee, cocoa, and caramel with a slightly medicinal thread. The alcohol is present but overall very well integrated. The finish is long, with quite warm peppery notes and fruits still very present. The fermented, medicinal, and astringent side comes out a bit more, without being unpleasant. A superb Savanna, with a strong character and mastery of its subject.

Wow, this one was a nice surprise. I do know that Savanna has a relatively high bar on their aged releases, but sometimes you just sit there and really enjoy sipping a rum. Very fruity and fresh with spices and a good balance with the roasted wood notes. I love the floral hint in the profile. Price to quality is very good in my mind.

👃 A perception of fresh and fruity sweetness emerges from the glass throughout the tasting. The show opens with magnificent aromas of Christmas cake with candied fruits (pineapple, papaya, kumquat, mandarin) and spices (clove, cinnamon, star anise). The fruits are also overripe (persimmons, pineapple) and jammy (wild strawberries, apricots). Putting my nose to the rim of the glass, I find it, this characteristic fragrance of bananas and strawberry candies 🪅. The esters are thus very fruity before turning towards solvents and other nail polishes. The indulgence is not left out with some scattered notes of nougat, fudge and vanilla pastry cream. Finally, a little touch of brine with those famous green olives in a jar. Perfect nose, intense, fruity, complex and evolving. - 93/100 😋 An explosion of overripe fruit flavors including Victoria pineapple, mango, papaya and melon left too long in the sun, all accompanied by spices (green pepper, pink berries, Madagascar chili). On the retronasal, a sweet and sour side on cherry and Morello cherry at picking and a tangy aspect on blood orange, kumquat and combava. I discover a note of green olives, more natural than brined, which I find less pronounced than on other Grands Arômes tasted before, without this being a problem. A nice intense, rich mouthfeel, not lacking refinement, where esters favor the fruits. - 91/100 ⛳ Long, starting with slightly burnt brown sugar crystals combined with a brunoise of roasted pineapples. Then, some spicy and peppery notes. Finally, a salty and slightly astringent side. - 89/100 The empty glass remains expressive for a long time on fermented pineapple and the astringency of the cask. This Grand Arôme rum aged in a humid warehouse made a great impression on me, notably by its complex, layered and elegant fruity scents and flavors as well as by the excellent integration of the alcohol, which borders on perfection. According to my tastes, I place it today just behind the GES and the Chronicles.

Here I had great expectations and they were not disappointed! The nose is still a little restrained but on the palate there is then a firework of aromas, very good!

The rum needs time in the glass, then it develops its potential! He was definitely one of the best in yesterday's tasting!alcohol perfectly integrated!

Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-rich pieces like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.

Cheers to Mirco for curating this tasting set! Looking at the bottlings side by side really has the potential to shift some ratings :) Among the GAs, the RumX bottling came out on top for me, with the Chronicals surpassing Thunderstruck (which surprised me tbh). Overall the profile and with that the individual bottlings has/have so much to offer and explore that I would gladly enjoy a bottle of each contender.

Online tasting organised by Mirco, super interesting tasting! I'm not an expert in Savanna so that was definitely an experience. Second one in the tasting, this one is very lactic, it feels like a yogurt. Nice but unusual
Review by Beach-and-Rum 🏖️🌴
What a flavor explosion. Reminds me a lot of a nice Jamaica rum. Funky, extremely fruity, strong, with some spices and cask influence. For me, the alcohol could have been a bit better integrated. But that's nitpicking at a very high level.
Review by Benoit Mahe
A superb nose. A mouth less to my taste, too sour and on the red fruits. A medium finish, not very pleasant, spicy and with an olive too present.
Review by mto75
from the Collection Metissage tasted the Fort Dauphin, Maputo and Madras: the Madras stands out for me, already because he is the only one of the three as a Grand Arome just clearly more intense, with wonderful red fruits and butter pastry on the nose. With the other two, I got a lot of grape and wood with the Armagnac finish. The Maputo is a bit too alcoholic on the nose for me with its 64.2%, I almost like the Fort Dauphin diluted to 44.8% better. Unfortunately, this does not work equally on the palate. There the Fort Dauphin seems then but rather thin.
Review by Djehey
Very cool! A big, very fresh aroma. The nose offers a very original mix of aromas of yogurt, vinegar, rubber, menthol. Of course, with the signature strawberry on the fruit side. On the palate, lots of freshness with a green chili that tickles the palate. The finish, however, is of medium length, but surely normal given the freshness in the mouth.
Review by Johnny Rumcask
First impression is rather Guyana. Very complex rum dominated by strong herbal notes. I find the rum very demanding, nothing you just drink casually. Astringent, you can almost chew the rum.
Review by Arnaud Faverjon
Sacré moment, intense, complexe, tout ce dont on a besoin, avec le fût qui a vraiment dompté le grand arôme et lui a apporté une patine sur l’encens et le bois de santal qui se marient à merveille.
Review by Émile Shevek
On the nose it's explosive with fermented/matured notes, solvent, toasted sugar, lots of different fruits (strawberry, cherry, pineapple and other tropicals), also chocolate, licorice, a bit of wood. On the palate it keeps the fermented/esters, there are roasted notes to which fruity scents like melon, strawberry, cherry and pineapple are added, then something floral, pepper and a bit of wood and leather (I didn't find olives). The finish is nice and long and persistent. Wow, it's magnificent in its complexity and aromatic variety, the abv is perfectly integrated, it remains quite round despite everything. In the empty glass roasted and fermented. Nice discovery, thanks to Hendrick for the opportunity.
Review by Allan Bjerreskov
One of the best rums I have ever tasted. An esterbomb with the classic grand arome-profile. Rotten strawberries on the nose, which is actually a compliment. On the palate I get a lot of the rotten fruit, varnish, nail polish and spices. It lasts a very long time, and if I forget to put my empty glass in the dishwasher, the whole apartment reeks of this excellent stuff.
Review by Mentalo
Doesn't quite reach my Grand Arome reference, but here you get what you expect. A fireworks of aromas.
Review by Vidaa Wz
Classic Grand Arôme but it does the job terribly well, lots of red and yellow fruits mix on the nose, quite a bit of spice. It's both indulgent and complex. Still easy to drink though.
