This Caroni is definitely at home on the dirty side. Fruit is only barely noticeable. On the palate, a floral note of violets develops, paired with workshop aromas. The finish then turns really dirty and spicy again. A very good Caroni and with a bit more fruit, it definitely would have had a chance to score a few more points.

Nice HTR profile, lots of complexity, broad aromatics, unfortunately with quite intense astringency on the palate. As Steffen Mayer revealed in his Caroni Bible, the same base product was bottled for Whisky Import First Cask, Schotman, and Wigman Caroni. In terms of taste, this only works to a limited extent; although the basic aroma is clearly related, the nuances point in quite different directions. Exciting and somewhat confusing at the same time. In a direct comparison, the Schotman and Wigman bottlings are clearly ahead of the First Cask for me, which is let down by its very astringent finish.

Delicious but also intense Caroni bottling. Very dirty overall, as if a group of cyclists braked hard on the street. Components are relatively balanced though, some cherry, chocolate, very good.

Quite unremarkable on the nose with lots of roasted notes, chocolate, nuts, a hint of gasoline, and a little gunpowder — after a while, fruit also emerges. Lots of wood on the palate with menthol and rubber. Then tar comes in. The fruit and chocolate are more prominent in the finish. Not a Caroni highlight... but nice and still tastier than many others 😃

I haven't had a 1999 Caroni in the glass until now. About this bottling, you can say it's more on the dirty side than the fruity one. But since I like those dirty notes, I really liked it.

Small side by side of four 1999 Caronis with Weiron, The first cask and 2x Distilia. The Weiron is enjoyable but suffers from its lower ABV not delivering comparable intensity and lacks complexity. Yet a nice easy experience. The other contenders are more on a level playing field. The last cask is rather restrained on the nose while delivering nicely on the palate. Quite some dirt with a creamy mozzarella and astringent finish. Nice Caroni profile. The two Distilia bottlings take the 1999 even a bit further. Both also deliver on the nose with dirt and some tropical fruits. For the younger there are additional toasted notes and dark chocolate on the plate, while the 25y bottling brings intensity, dirt and some fruits in a very nicely balanced package. This one is particularly nice and takes the crown of the vintage so far.

Nice piece! Great Caroni for me as a Caroni beginner. A bit of dirt, tar and roasted notes. But not too extreme. Menthol comes in the finish. The alcohol is very well integrated. Very very nice.
