Don Q Reserva Añejo 7 Años
Where this really shines is in a glass with mint or cola: light-bodied, vanilla-and-caramel led, with young oak, dried apricot and a little pepper. Neat it's clean and elegant but thin, and the 40% takes some of the edge off. Several tasters call it a great daiquiri or mojito base and an easy step up from basic "rum-tasting" rums.
The community says- Great in cocktails
- Clean, elegant distillate
- Keep in mind: Thin at 40%

From community reviews · summarized with AI
Light vanilla-caramel rum, best as a mixer Most agree it's a light, well-made mixer that makes a genuinely good daiquiri or mojito. Neat it's pleasant but thin and a bit plain — nobody's calling it exciting.

Sweet without being really sweet. Very tasty, straightforward with the necessary depth. Very pleasant wood notes.
Review by Jakob Deiner
Most helpful critical review
A bit of vanilla, a bit of wood, quite alcoholic. Minimal sweetness and roasted. For me, rather boring and dry. Compared to Havana Especial, Havana 7, Pampero Especial, Bacardi 8, it performed the worst in cola. Somehow has a slight "off note" for me in mixed drinks, without being able to exactly describe which one. Drinks: - Neat 3/5 - Rum Cola: 2/5 - Rum Mule: 3/5

Don Q makes light, very light rum. Who expects flavor bombs is wrong here, neither full-bodied rum nor super heavy (and sweetened) wood can be found here. The star is the distillate, which comes elegant and delicate. Tasted neat, aromas of dried yellow fruits and wood show up, in the mouth a champagne-like quality is added, a touch of oleo saccharum combines with pear and the yellow fruits to create a wonderful delicate creaminess. The 40% unfortunately negates this somewhat. The finish is again a bit more tart and woody, delicate tannins and en touch of tobacco complete the picture. This is super crafted, pure but still very unspectacular. This rum is a mixer, but a mixer with star qualities. As a component in tiki drinks, it remains far in the background, where it belongs. It makes a super mojito, to which the light wood gives a great depth. The Old Cuban could become the signature drink, it combines perfectly with mint and champagne (or other brut sparkling wine). That's where it really takes off. If you're looking for a dry Spanish mixer that puts the distillate front and center, this is it. I'm a fan (neat: 70/cocktail:86): 78

7,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is with caramelized nuts and tropical fruits, chocolate pastry, roasted/charred wood with vanilla and baking spices, molasses are quite thick with buttery caramel and chicory coffee. 7,5:On the palate, the attack is soft, sweet, silky with notes of creme brulee, caramel, milk chocolate, spicy with pepper, fruity with pineapple, some pastry as strawberry cake, salty, the wood is charred, so it comes a bit musty and there is also tobacco. 7:The finish is medium, sweet, woody, spicy with caramel, chocolate, dry, with caramelized dried fruits..

I'd rank this as a very good beginner rum. Very light profile with fruit and caramel. The profile os rather sweet without being too sweet.

Tasting Artur's Puerto Rico rums. A nose so different from the others that I thought of a pirate. Esters, tropical fruits, mango and varnished wood. We're in another world here. A lively palate with esters, tropical fruit, flowers, nuts and a rather massive wood. A long finish for the first time in this tasting.

Rum No. 18 Thin, but so far the most complex of rounds 1-18, but still plenty of room for improvement. Thank you Artur for this mega-split journey through rums from Puerto Rico. Thank you also for the work you always do for us and making old bottles possible for us! 😊

The liquid History of Puerto Rico - many thanks to Artur for sharing! A bit alcoholic in the finish.

Day trip Dortmund August 2025. Shop Stendels. Then I got to taste 3 Don Q on site. This is an average rum that beginners might like. Vanilla and honey on the nose and on the palate then vanilla and caramel.

A good rum for mixing

First of all, many thanks to Artur for the extreme effort and for sharing such old rums at all. The rums themselves were not really spectacular except for a few exceptions, BUT I still really enjoyed it because as a normal mortal you just don't get to taste such rums anymore and all the background knowledge that Artur shared I find insanely interesting. I really take my hat off to that. Big respect!
Review by DomM
Light in the nose yet showing a high quality. Wood, vanilla, roasted nuts and a hint of dried fruits. While not overly intense, the nose is quite up there for a low ABV column rum imo. On the palate the profile is dominated by wood / molasses / vanilla with not very much complexity. All in all a high quality product for what it is. Works very well as a light rum in drinks as well.
Review by abaker-rum
A light bodied rum that has a mellow nose and light taste. The oak carries most of the notes, with vanilla and caramel on the palate and finish. There is a slight hint of vinegar on the nose. I also get some milk chocolate on the finish.

A little too thin and boring.
Review by Christian Rudt
Very finely distilled with 40 percent of course a little thin but since I have it in a mojito at the same time, thanks to the community, you can immediately see where this rum shines. It does what it's supposed to do there - deliver flavors without dominating. Great mixer 👍 Pure, the sherry cask is currently my favorite.

This was another rum I got to try at a rum tasting. It's a solid rum suitable for beginners. Relatively fruity on the nose and taste.

Sehr ausgewogen, leichte Fassaromen von Nuss. Tolles PLV.

Arturs Puerto Rico tasting, thanks for the great overview and history :-) Wow, after all the mediocrity and disappointments, a real standout upwards! Nice sipper that offers vanilla as well as wood, intensity, and fruit. Still not outstanding, but pleasantly surprised :-)

Really enjoy this and all the Don Q rums I’ve tried (but especially this). Been tasting them head to head with their price-comparable Bacardi offerings and Don Q wins every time for me. Will be my goto brand for Puerto Rican style for the foreseeable future.

Absolutely crazy positive surprise and great development compared to the bottlings of decades before. Grilled pineapple, dried apricot, young wood, vanilla, tobacco, milk chocolate and pleasant tannins. Top pLV and surely awesome in daiquiri, air mail & co! The surprise of the evening so far! 🇵🇷🥂

The liquid History of Puerto Rico Tasting No. 18 - so far the highlight of the tasting and really good in a Daiquiri. Purely the same aromas as its predecessors (young wood, vanilla and sweetness), but significantly stronger.
Review by Martin Spooner
On the nose raisin notes. With a hint of vanilla. Suitable for the pre-Christmas season. On the palate then actually quite good tasting. Maybe a bit thin. It stays with vanilla and also a hint of caramel. Maybe also a bit of pepper.
Review by HenryL
Pleasant, gentle aroma dominated by sweet vanilla. The palate is similar, very light. Neat, it's too boring for me, even though it's very well made. For beginners who want to switch to unsweetened rum, Don Q 7 is probably a good choice. Following Lukas's example, I really like to use this rum in cocktails like Mojito, Old Cuban, and Queens Park Hotel Super Cocktail. It works great there.
Review by Rafael Gonzalez
Its a decent rum for dirty mojitos and other mixing coktails.

Lehky rum, kde citim med, vanilku a cukr
Review by Steve S.
A good beginner sipper to get you from rums that taste like "rum" to more complex, barrel aged rums. Very caramel and fruit forward with just the hint of whiskey on the back end. Definitely sweet without being overly sugary. Not quite my thing yet, but I could get used to it.
Review by Fuhgetaboutit
Very quite enjoyable, and easy to throw back. Soft, woody notes with a touch of pepper, Sweet, but with no residual or lingering sugar. Will make a very good Cuba Libre. Wish we can give two ratings – One et and one in a mixer of our choice.
Review by Barney487
Had hoped for more but for the price a good choice in cocktails. Quite flat, few aromas or quickly faded, quite young therefore little depth, good in cocktails when the rum shouldn't be the main focus.
Review by Bowling Bob
Sherry, buttered toast, almonds & oak with some dried apricot fruit. Extra oak on the finish.

Read full review ›It doesn't pull up any trees or do anything "new" or "innovative" but its a very solid rum. What it does do in terms of the flavour profile it does very well. It's a much better rum than say Bacardi 8 for example.

Oh how i love you new Don Q Anejo. Nuts and wood, vanilla and turning into caramell, together with some mace on the palate. very well rounded. Daiquiri: Yes maam, modern and slick, full and complex, what you want in 2025 in a Daiquiri 5/5 Stars
