Here's the twist: the nose and the palate barely match. Several tasters get fruit and freshness up front, then a sweeter, drier glass than the usual Diplomático — vanilla, caramel, oak and a spicy, slightly charred edge from the pot still. It's less sweetened than the classic line, which some like and others find plain. A short finish is the recurring gripe.

Blind tasting: yeah, Spanish style, very clear! Unfortunately very alcoholic with solvent smell. Caramel, vanilla, grain and sweetish. On the palate strongly burning alcohol, but not because of higher proof, but because of poorly integrated alcohol. The rum should have 46-48%, but it burns quite a bit. It is spicy with a slight bitterness – unfortunately not deep or exciting at all. The finish is negligibly short and not really aromatic. It reminds me strongly of the recently tasted Botucal Distillery Coll. No. 1 Batch Kettle 47%. 57 points.

Store visit Rum Paradise Hamburg April 2025. Next up, a Botucal. This is also a slightly sweeter rum. Vanilla and caramel on the nose, but some wood is also recognizable. There is also a hint of chocolate on the palate.

Good, pleasing ron. Not very sweet. Certainly a good accompaniment to a cigar. There are better, but also much worse.

Not bad, not bad at all. Funny is that nose is completely different than the taste. Lots of fruity aromas with some kind of freshness that I cannot describe while taste is exclusively around sweet notes such as vanilla, nougat etc. Really nice rum with one fault- short finish. That would be 73 for me. Retasting and pulling 1 point down.

After a long delay with the Diplomatico triplet, here we go. The nose compared to the usual Diplomatico is quite unexpected. Fruit and floral tones, oak and alcohol. The taste is a huge change from the nose. Rather heavier sweet tones, vanilla and caramel. Very short finish.

In April 2022, I visited a Botucal rum tasting in Essen with my friend Enrico at Cigarren Baydar & Sahin GmbH. Brand Ambassador Peter S. guided us wonderfully through the evening. Good cigars and a very tasty buffet rounded off the great evening. Since then, I really appreciate BOTUCAL’s stuff.
