Centenario Fundación 20 Años Reserva Especial
Most tasters land in the same friendly zone: a soft, sweet Costa Rican with vanilla, caramel and brown sugar, plus a little candied fruit and orange peel. Several call it one of the better entry sippers and love the price-to-pleasure. But not everyone's charmed — a few find it "too sweet," watered down, or too round and fruitless to hold their attention.
The community says- Smooth and mild
- Vanilla-caramel sweetness
- Keep in mind: Added sugar

How does Centenario Fundación 20 Años Reserva Especial taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Soft, sweet everyday Costa Rican sipper Well-liked as an easy, sweet everyday sipper — vanilla, caramel and a peppery edge. The catch: it's clearly sweetened and light, so bolder-rum drinkers get bored.

Good aroma intensity for this style. Notes typical for evaporated came juice dominate, with some aging influence. The bite is unpleasant, sourdough it tried to be masked by sugar. Sweet and syrupy texture. Not my style at all.
Review by Johannes G
Really tasty sweet rum that behaves differently from other sweet rums. The sweetness comes through first both on the nose and on the palate and accompanies the flavor rather than covering it up. Delicious fruit and fine little spicy aromas dominate. For me, one of the best entry-level rums and the Centenario with the best value for money.

I think this is a very under rated rum. It's in the cheaper end yet its complexity is very convincing. A wonderful sweet, fruity and spice nose going into a complex well balanced heavy palate. The finish is long, a bit sweet and has a nice peppery sting to it. Price to quality is very good.
Review by Eugene227
It feels soft, round, and clearly designed for relaxed drinking. Vanilla, caramel, honey, and light wood notes make it pleasantly sweet without seeming completely artificial. Not a complex rum, but an uncomplicated sipper with a good price-enjoyment ratio.
Review by Torsten vom Endt
Tastes as you would expect from a South American: sweet and subtly fruity, the spices are not exaggerated and the finish is mild.
Review by TheJackDrop
Mwah mwah mwah, We're on a RON, and it's really not my favorite thing. It's too round, too vanilla, too buttery, there's no fruit or pep, it gets boring fast. It's well made, but not for me. On a positive note though: it leaves an impressive scent in the glass when empty, which is cool.
Review by F.L.O.
One of the few sweet rums in my collection that is always on the table when things need to be uncomplicated and the consumers are still beginners. It's also the best of the centenario range because it has rough edges as well as sweetness. It also has a slight spiciness. Super part !

My first Centenario tasting. Even though I’m more into English rums, I found this Costa Rican fellow very tasty. Slight woody note with fruit tints well very pleasant and rounded. I can definitely recommend for daily sipping.
Review by Schnubbii
Tasty, round and balanced. Still my favorite among the sweetened rums.
Review by Maxi
The third in the group. Smell-wise very similar to the 9 and 12. Possibly a bit more caramel and a little almond added. Taste-wise clearly sweeter than the previous two, which I actually didn't expect. But that also makes it rounder, more pleasant, and fuller-bodied. Also noticeably more interesting and aromatic. Vanilla and caramel dominate here too. Joined by pepper, nuts, dark chocolate, and wood. A slight hint of orange peel can be detected again. The price-performance ratio for this rum is balanced. A good "everyday rum".
Review by Stano
I got it for a holiday and I have no complaints, a sweet raisin rum of the Spanish solera type, suitable for any occasion, very suitable also for beginners who want to take the next step. The price is also very interesting.
Review by MarkoS
Very good balanced taste. Sweet rum with a hint of tropical fruit
Review by Rumbaer
Nice woody notes on the nose with red fruits and a slight sweetness with spices. On the palate then woody again, raisins and sherry (probably the brandy). A pleasant finish with some sweetness and spiciness at the same time.
Review by Daniel
Pleasant sweet rum with top value for money.
Review by Rumpalumpa
If you fancy something sweet, this one is great. Not much on the nose at first, then roasted aromas and candied fruit, with a hint of cherries. Very sweet on the palate, spicy and roasted again. Rather short finish.
Review by frseec
Very alcoholic smell, surprisingly a very pleasant sweetness at first on the taste. This sweetness is then accompanied by a slight sharpness and stays relatively long on the palate. Very good finish.
Review by Tim
Smell is initially rather thin, there is not so much to discover. Longer in the glass but then comes caramel, roasted aromas, some chocolate and fruit. In the mouth very velvety, sweet with lots of honey or caramel. The Centenario 30y has >40g/L, the 20y seems to be against it not quite as sweet or it is simply more tangy.

Smooth as butter

Round, mild, not too over-sweet rum from Costa Rica. You can definitely do it!

I love it :)

A classic grand ron, perhaps a little too sweet.
Review by Maurizio Mantovani
Rum molto dolce e zuccherino, perde un po' nei profumi, nel complesso la qualità sta nel giusto prezzo anche se un qualche sospetto di aggiunta di zucchero sembra esserci
Review by Anthony Dalessandro
Caramel and woody aroma on the nose On the palate, caramel and sugar sweetness, perhaps a little too much. The finish is a combination of caramel and a hint of vanilla.
Review by Alexis Lambert
Honestly good! Rum accessible for beginners and always pleasant for the more knowledgeable.

Very pleasant rum. But I would probably spend a few more euros and buy the 30-year-old. Even more balanced and complex as well as a cooler bottle :)

Interesting, pleasant nose and palate.

Very good beginner rum, nice red color
Review by ThreeH
Pleasant entry-level rum. Sweet caramel nose without going too much into the sweet fraction. The palate follows the nose without surprises. Easy going and quite good, as despite all the roundness the sugar does not come across excessively.

Ideal with desserts.

My RumRatings review from 6 years ago: On the nose, the rum is hardly sharp. Very sweet notes are noticeable. Caramel and toffee. Fruity and woody notes are barely perceptible. But everything feels pleasantly light. On the palate, it is mainly sweet. Vanilla and caramel mix with an undefinable sweetness that probably comes from the sugar. The rum is still surprisingly sharp. And that's despite a lot of sugar being added. The finish remains sweet with a slight alcohol note. The cask somehow hardly comes through at all, which is a shame when it says 20 on it. Overall, it's not a bad rum and you can drink it on a sociable evening. When the bottle is empty, at least it's not a loss. I admit I was also a fan of Centenario as a newbie and it fascinated me for drinking rum. I also thought the sweetness made it high quality. Over time I learned that Centenario is a classic blender. Lots of sugar and a Solera 20 are supposed to convey premium character. It seems to work since I can now find Centenario 20 even in the local supermarket.

A wonderful sweet sipper 🥰 Especially compared to the 9 and the 12, the 20 is a huge step forward. Is it a surprise in its sensory profile? - No, this typical profile is already known from countless other bottlings, but that doesn't diminish its qualities in the slightest. It is a typical representative of the Spanish style and hits all the right notes for me. My conclusion: If you don't like sweet – stay away! If you're looking for a typical smooth sipper in the Spanish style and aren't put off by a corresponding sweetness – go for it, you won't regret it. Beautiful rum ❤️

Sweet pleasant rum. Vanilla, nougat and caramel in the taste. Go for a bottle. Retaste: This one is sweet but it is so nicely balanced and flavourful, full bodied. I would go for a bottle but again I think the rum is not meeting its price range. I can get better rums with more characteristical taste for such price.
Review by Julian Würtele
Top rum in the higher price ranges A bit more expensive than average rums. Convinces with complexity, extreme smoothness (can be drunk immediately) and sweetness. Overall without weaknesses.

A tad of sugar, but this is a nice round supper

In the nose rather light, vanilla, caramel. On the palate, oak comes through, on one hand sweet and creamy, but also with some bitter notes, tannins. In the finish oak, slightly bitter. Drinks: - Neat: 3.5/5 - Rum Punch: 3.5/5

Soft, mild with a certain sharpness in the finish. Pleasant sweetness, would have expected it much stronger. Price-wise okay, although there are better alternatives in this segment (e.g. Diplomatico/Botucal).
Review by MoMcGurk
Not as flavorful as some, but a pleasant aftertaste. Went up in my thoughts the more I drank over the months.

Good round rum. Very balanced. The taste is rather sweet and spicy! It is not very fruity.
Review by Kay Meertens
Lots of orange peel, Cointreau-like. Some plaster in the nose.
Review by Jindrich Strobl
Nice but too sweet for me.
Review by Mc Pirate
Typical round Centenario nose, caramel and candied fruits. Very sweet palate, however well controlled, it feels like a cocktail, a candy.
Review by Armin Tamzarian
Good rum. Round taste with vanilla note, woody and very pleasant.
Review by Sebastian Kornett
Don't even know why it has such good ratings. Diluted, meaningless, sugared rum.
