Don Papa Rum
Vanilla, orange peel and caramel, thick and candy-sweet — this is Don Papa's calling card. One taster nailed it as a "sugar bomb with orange zest"; others land on butterscotch, toffee apple, even bubble gum. Around 26-29 g/l of added sugar sits behind it all, and many members find it too artificial to sip. Loved as a first rum, dismissed by regulars as closer to orange liqueur than rum.

How does Don Papa Rum taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Very sweet, orange-vanilla, more liqueur than rum Deeply divisive. Beginners find it soft, sweet and easy; experienced drinkers call it artificial, too sugary, and "not a rum." Best mixed with cola or treated as a dessert liqueur.

On The Rocks: On the nose a very pleasant Vanilla and Butterscotch/Caramel Aroma with a very feint orange peel (almost like an orange pop float). Taste reveals a very nice Vanilla and Caramel Flavour with a mild/moderate orange peel undertone. Finish is medium length with the sweetness fading into a slightly bitter taste with the orange peel continuing to hide in the background. Mixed Pepsi Zero: On the nose a mild Sweet Aroma with a hint of orange and vanilla. Taste reveals a Really good Sweet Vanilla flavour and orange mixture. Finish is short with the vanilla orange fading away. This is an Excellent Mixer.

After a long time, once again took a wrong turn. The Don Papa is like an artificial medicine enriched with vanilla, caramel and orange flavors. While the nose is already irritating (high-proof Fanta), then comes the blackout in the mouth. Totally artificially medicinal, like a medicine you had to take as a child, but tasted awful, very sour. The three flavors pull themselves one-dimensionally from front to back. A rum this is not (more).
Review by Luuzi
Very fragrant orange and vanilla aroma. Fruity and sweet on the nose. For the beginner a good, but from the aroma exceptional rum. Don Papa seems over the tasting slightly artificial and reminiscent of Dr. Oetker rum flavor. One likes him, or not.

A bit too sweet for me 😊
Review by Mirko Frosini 🇮🇪
I don't tolerate it. I never liked it, even when I got into early rums with Diplomatico, Kraken and Pampero.
Review by Patrik Onderka
Well, this is just a missing tasting of Don Papa’s the most iconic rum, that popularized rum in Czechia in general. Even in my collection, there are several of them in nice tubas from nostalgy. Anyway, it´s not so sweet as Baroko, it has its place in Nico

The very belligerent Don Papa 7y has been one of my favorites so far. Now there is the new DP 7y, the Single Island. The old DP 7y was called Small Batch. This is all due to the new sugar regulation, which allows a maximum of 20 grams of sugar for a rum to still be called rum. However, it's the taste that counts and unfortunately I have to say that the new DP 7y doesn't taste as good to me as the old DP 7y. Much less sweet, orangey and vanilla. More spicy and some people will say it now tastes like "real" rum. Nice, but it's no longer one of my favorites :-( Anyone who liked the old DP 7y will now have to switch to Baroko or Masskara. Baroko is rather sweet and vanilla-like, Masskara more fruity. The old DP 7y is probably passé, what a shame :-(

It's a good starter, but clearly too sweet. To sum up, my tasting notes: On the nose: Vanilla, Banana In the mouth: Caramel, Orange zest, Banana Finish: Caramel, Orange zest

yeah, this is bad. I don't understand how anyone can like this, rum-newbie or not. the tastes is just so artificial and strong, you just want to rinse your mouth of it. not enjoyable with coke either, wich almost every other rum is.
Review by Rumbaer

flavors of vanilla, honey and candied fruit - like a liqueur
Review by heckto🥃
For me, it's not enjoyable neat. Too artificial and chemical. Apart from that, you can taste caramel, vanilla, tropical fruits, and a hint of orange. However, I find it pretty good as a mixed drink with cola.
Review by Djehey
Don Papa is not a good rum, one could even say it is dubious... But it has succeeded in doing what few rums have managed to do: arouse an interest in a world that many of us were unaware of until now and create a new passion. It is this new audience that allows distilleries to survive. In this sense, Don Papa rums are more valuable than the most expensive rums.
Review by ordogh
Simply too sweet and artifici for my taste. Much like a liquior than a rum, but some like it.
Review by Jakob
Very sweet, very artificial. From the category "chemical cocktail in a glass" - hardly recognizable as rum.

Soft vanilla dominant. Long finish
Review by LukaŽiga
6:On the nose is light and fruity-citruses, vanilla... 6:On the palate, notes of vanilla, honey, and candied fruit, even some pear. Sherry cask is noticed. Sugary... 5:The finish is quite short, a bit dry and sweet. A great entry into the world of rums... But not when you develop some taste..

very strong vanilla scent. a strong taste of vanilla and oak barrel. fine taste like dried fruit.

Sugar... for a caramelized nose and mouth
Review by Decky Hicks Doughty
The nose is full of orange and vanilla to an extent that it seems artificially flavoured. Some sweet spices linger in the background. The palette follows on from the nose quite well. It's extremely sweet. Some oak in the background makes me think the age statement of 7 years is true. The finish is rather short. A little perfumed but mainly sweet. It's hard to get away from that sugar. Overall, it is for somebody, but for me this is way too sweet and feel synthetic.

So good!! Smells so good! Definitely mixer but can stand on its own. Very tasty caramel and butterscotch. On the rocks: Smell: sweet vinilla Taste: Pepsi zero excellent mixer.

Reminds me of childhood summers. Vanilla ice cream, with a smaller serving of rum and raisin ice cream. And slight hint of cola. Very subtle coconut, though that might be the power of suggestion - the idea of swimming pools and sunblock. And finishes with the taste of banana sweets. Very tasty, as long as you drink it as a liqueur, not a rum.
Review by Jan Lu
Bah! It was offered to me at a birthday party and unfortunately I said yes. The artificially strange taste had already been forgotten. This spirit doesn't have much to do with rum in my eyes. Not good with cola either.👎🏻
Review by Romain de L
Not my jam. Very sugary and caramel driven - lacking overall character - but easy to drink nonetheless. Maybe as an entry point?
Review by MarkD
Some people hate it, some love it. Personally, love it to bits, but it’s not rum - it’s a rum based drink.
Review by Jakub Hrubý
Very fragrant with citrus and vanilla
Review by Luca
An imposition. This stuff should not be called rum. I can not understand how this can taste someone.
Review by MJ72
Good as an entry-level
Review by Vincent D
Tasted as a treat and to remind myself of the early days. Better than today's baroko, which is a syrup. Not so good. Medicated. Reminds me of Kraken. Vanilla and caramel + sugar syrup. Disgusting.

Very fruity!
Review by Stuart Geers
Tastes sweet but a light sweetness not thick honey sweet.
Review by epicsune 🇸🇪
A nice sipping rum if you want something that’s a mix between cointreau and rum. Not a bad thing but the orange flavour can be a bit overwhelming. Nose is very much butterscoth and oranges, sweet and inviting. Plate is what you would expect, lots of sweet orange and caramel flavour. After sipping for a while there is more of an artificial and medicinal taste mixed in with the oranges. I would recommend a nice piece of dark chocolate to enjoy with your rum.

29g/l of sugar, 2.4g of glycerol and 359 mg/l just extremely artificial and abnormally sweet like boiled down Fanta..., has nothing to do with a rum. disgusting.
Review by Beach-and-Rum 🏖️🌴
Very sweet, almost like a liqueur. Definitely a lot of sugar and flavorings were added here. Tastes very artificial but I think okay for beginners.
Review by Joshua Engels
Very sweet and soft. Just the way i like it
Review by Maxi
Besides the popular Botucal, today I also want to taste a sample of Don Papa and compare the probably most well-known beginner rums. The nose is extremely fruity. You might think you have a fruit brandy in front of you. Red fruits, berries, cherry, and strawberry stand out on the nose. After some resting time, the strawberry even slightly comes to the forefront. Unfortunately, the taste doesn't live up to what the nose promises. I find it significantly weaker than the Botucal. Extremely watered down and lacking flavor. Even after multiple tastings, it remains really boring in taste. A slightly fruity-tasting water with alcohol. You can't even talk about a finish, it's that short. All in all, a big disappointment. Compared to the Botucal, it's worlds worse. There are much better options in this price range.

Smell and taste extremely like dried plums and rum grapes... Too much for me.
Review by Christoph
Better than Bacardi and consorts in any case, but overall still a very artificial taste. A touch of natural fruit flavors is overlaid by artificial sweetness. As a party rum for beginners possibly quite ok.
Review by Pongo
Mild and rather sweet rum. Exactly my taste.

Even too sweet. Easy to drink.

this is not a rum
Review by denny2195
The standard Don Papa rum is nicely soft and sweet with lots of vanilla, honey and candied fruits. Very easy to drink, almost dessert-like. Top for beginners, for some maybe a bit too sweet – but overall a really pleasant rum that I still like to taste now and then.
Review by Ondřej Koller
Lot of sweetness, almost artificially tasting (vanilla, cookies)
Review by Portman
Unfortunately, it absolutely doesn't meet my idea of what rum is. Way too sweet, almond liqueur-like, oversweetened and overwhelming. A glass for dessert is fine, but after that I'm out.
Review by Frank
I did. My opinion should not be based on prejudice. Three Don Papa compared.Nose: very artificial, sweet, like sugar pearls dissolved in water with vanilla and citrus orange. In addition, there is an artificial fruity note, further from the gumball machine. Honestly does not invite to try!Palate: very artificial. Orange, or better imitation orange, in sugar water with vanilla and some alcohol. Really not tasty and very inferior. The finish is downright undrinkable. Had to really tip the rest away.

Extremely sweet and aromatic, very artificial

Well it is don papa, there is at least some spice and some hint of rum under all the artificial sweet orange notes. It is note terrible, more like the equivalent of McDonald's, there are times for it, just not really for me
