Beginners and anyone building a first bar tend to reach for this one. It's a soft, sweet Venezuelan column-still rum leaning caramel, vanilla, chocolate and raisin, with a woody edge on the back. The catch shows up on the palate: at 40% the alcohol reads a bit sharp and unintegrated, and several tasters call it thin and one-note. Many keep it as their everyday cola pour.

I also bought it back then as a starter rum, but I still think it tastes far too alcoholic and is very poorly integrated. After all, it was only transported to nirvana with lots of ice and cola.

The nose is somewhat typical of a central American rum with lots of raisin, caramel and wood. The palate sticks with the nose. Like a raisin reduction drizzled over wood. There's some alcohol burn in there though. The finish is quite subtle, as it all fades away quickly. It's nice with dark chocolate notes but not present for long. Overall its a good rum. I would love to try something from this distillery with more age and at a higher ABV. All of this rums shortcomings could be solved by that.

Tried to use this rum in a rum/raisin cake and the result was amazing. This is a rum in the cheaper end of the spectrum and it's definitely a good beginner rum. Not as sweet as the rums from Riise, but getting close to it. The nose is light and sweet with chocolate, vanilla and oak with a touch of butterscotch. The palate is sweet with chokolate and nougat, but it also has a slight bitterness with nuts and fruits. The endof the palate has smoke to it. The finish is sweet with smoky leather and vanilla. Price to quality is very good.

The alcohol titillates the nostrils despite the "small" 40%. 7,5:On the palate, the attack is smooth, and the aromas are in line with the nose, with caramel (still dominant), roasted/chocolate and wood, distant fruit. Coconut is replaced by tobacco, note of menthol, which make an appearance. 6,5:The finish is rather brief, with tobacco and discreet vanilla remaining for a few moments before fading away..

Caramel with honey on the nose, but also some chocolate and fruit. The mouthfeel (<70) is not as good as the smell (~80), because very alcoholic sharp. Nevertheless, solid rum for the price and is good for mixing.

A sweet entry-level rum with honey, chocolate and vanilla notes. Not a taste explosion but for €20 you can't go wrong here. Not my thing neat but absolutely drinkable with cola or in other mixed drinks.

Great value for money with this guy. It has a pleasant smell, which to me stands out as kind of creamy. The barrel is pretty noticeable. Tasting, it again tastes surprisingly woody, as I can't imagine it being actually that old.

It is supposed to be a solid rum, but it does not set any particular accents in terms of aroma or taste. It may be sufficient for cocktails or uncomplicated enjoyment, but for rum lovers looking for depth and sophistication, there are better alternatives in this price range.

Relatively inexpensive sweet rum for beginners. Personally, it is too sweet for me, the alcohol could be better integrated despite the 40% and, due to the sweetness mentioned, the spice and wood notes fade into the background.

This is a sweeter Spanish style rum, while not as sweet as some it has been dosed and hence has a slight syrupy element. That said it is a well blended rum and punches above its price point if you can get over the dosage. Nose is sweet and sugary, with treacle and chocolate notes, an easy mouth with some spice and barrel notes with caramel and brown sugar. Finish has more peppery alongside genteel carmamel and fades quickly. It’s an easy drinking rum but fairly unmemorable

Nose: Very unspectacular. Light notes of berries. Taste: Sweet, very watery, the body is completely missing. Complexity is nowhere to be found. Finish: Short and alcoholic. Not very well integrated.

This is quite tasty. Easy to drink. Nose: Molasses, caramel, butterscotch, raisins. Taste: Same as nose, sweet, dark chocolate, buttery, rich and smokey with zero burn. Delicious! Medium to Long finish.

Too sweet and artificial for my taste... I can smell the addition of artificial flavors and sugar masking poorly integrated alcohol. Still, it's less tampered with than a bumbu. But then, it's no dream... Especially when you have the 2006 Trois Rivières brut de fût next to it...

My RumRatings review from 5 years ago: I don't want to spend too much time on the rum. On the nose, it's a typical sweet rum. Not much happens there. Caramel and a bit of vanilla. Sugar syrup and some spices. All very subtle. On the palate, there's a lot of sweetness, caramel, baking spices, and some wood. Maybe a bit nutty too. Overall, it feels overly creamy and fades quickly. Good for Coke and more suitable for beginners when drinking neat. But at that price, you can't really expect much more.

Good rum, without being complex it has moderately interesting characteristics. The structured aroma with sensations of wood, cocoa, vanilla, caramel and traces of butter is pleasant but still lacks complexity. In the mouth it does not give off any better development than what is found on the nose.

At the time my entry into the premium rum segment and despite a well-filled bar, he will keep his place there. Maybe not super balanced and also really not complex. Still, nice wood and roasted flavors paired with some vanilla and fruit. Sweet but not necessarily too sweet. The Pampero goes actually always. Also a nice gift for beginners. While leather is noticeable on the nose, the taste reflects rather sweeter notes. Still, in the background, slightly woody/peppery. Unfortunately, especially in the finish, a clear alcohol note can be tasted.

A very good entry-level rum but sweetened with 16g/L sugar and contains an alcohol that is not well integrated. Sweet, caramel notes with chocolate, coconut and raisins run from the nose to the finish. It would be interesting to age this distillate for 20 years in an old sherry cask and bottle it at 55%.

After revisiting this bottle after many years, I have to conclude that this is actually a decent rum spirit (deliberate choice of words) for it'd price. I think there is almost no better cheap rum that is a pleasant as this to mix or even sip (when to get drunk)

Very robust and suitable for everyday use for a low-budget product. Heavy, chocolaty-sweet smell, sweet, vanilla-like raisin flavor. Overall too sweet for me, a little too dark and not complex enough, but still recommendable for the price.

Beautiful round bottle in leather. Pleasant rum for beginners when you want to limit sugars... the price of the rum is also favorable... the nose for me is smoky, maybe I also smell leather and wood. On the palate I taste caramel, smoke, nuts.

Very pleasant classic rum, one of the best I've tried so far. Smooth, round, simply good and affordable too. We've had it several times now and it's really good, Cuba libre is great with it, upgraded from 7.5 to 8.2. Purchase recommendation, 20€ on Amazon, crazy

Often available for about twenty at the big 'A', so an absolute bargain. Also at normal price my price/performance winner. Fruity neat, but also spicier notes of a 'Dark Rum', pleasant and balanced sweetness. A class below Botucal RE, Don Papa 7, Plantation XO but not miles away. Bought this a year or two ago and have been sipping away at it since. Oaky was pretty prominent in the beginning, but that has evened out more. Especially if I let it breathe. Quite a dark amber pour strawberries, blackberries. Maybe plum. It's growing on me, though supposedly tests show this was sugared a bit. Not sure it tastes that sweet, but could be.

A delicious Spanish style rum that doesn’t break the bank. A bit thin due to its lower proof, but full of intense flavors of caramel, raisin, and even some milk chocolate. Works fantastic as a split base with a Jamaican rum in a daiquiri. Possibly my favorite to use in a split base daiquiri.

I only bought this rum because it's supposed to go well with cola. I don't think it's good for drinking neat. Very alcoholic, little body. In the cola, I find it quite good, as some flavor notes like coconut come through that I didn't get when tasting it neat. Probably the rather biting alcohol overpowered these.

A bit disappointed, the retest really let me down! I used to like it a lot. Now it's just average, either the recipe was changed like the Beutel or my taste has changed that much. Of course it's sweet, but it's lacking everywhere. It's really just so-so, the alcohol isn't really well integrated.
