Mezan Chiriqui
Sipped neat, this one splits the room: most tasters find it thin and watery for 40%, with faint caramel, honey and black pepper. The moscatel cask finish is the saving grace when you notice it — soft sweetness, a moscatel-grape note, even a whisper of grappa. Several say it works better in a cocktail or an old fashioned than in a tasting glass.

Thin, light Panama rum with moscatel finish A light Panama column rum most find watery and unremarkable neat. The moscatel finish wins a few over, but many wish it were bottled stronger than 40%.

👃 The nose offers us sweetness with honey, caramel, a bit of woodiness. 👄 You add a bit of pepper and vanilla on the palate. The finish is short. In short, it's a light, feminine rum, an entry point for beginners. It can also serve as an ingredient for your cocktails 🍹

A very light unimpressive nose. Mmm... Taste not much better. Incredibly diluted and light. Faint minerals. Some caramel and toffee. Why bottle this at 40%. Might even be nice at cask strength or overproof. Every flavour this has, which is not bad, but too watery. Let down!
Review by Timo Groeger
Also a normal average rum. Not particularly good, but not really bad either. Can also be enjoyed neat. Tastes slightly alcoholic, but I like that :) So maybe not for gourmets, but otherwise okay.

Part of the 1423 rum Christmas-calendar from 2023. The nose is very spirit-y and spicy despite it being 40% ABV. In the notes I found spices, wood and some hints of molasses. Might be good in a cocktail

Extremely weak in taste, alcohol poorly integrated and simply not a well-rounded thing and irrelevant...
Review by Schnapsschuesse
Very light on the nose. There's not much going on here, but the muscatel barrel is noticeable. This gives it a very pleasant sweetness that works surprisingly well with the clear pepper note. A hint of grappa and a gentle, even pleasant spiciness on the finish - but mild and not alcoholic. I'm very surprised here. Very, very boring nose, but then the taste is quite unique - it should be dull, but I really like it. A very unusual combination. Addendum: unfortunately extremely flat after a few hits. Ouch...

Sample no.7 of the 24 days of rum calendar 2023. Thin and light both on the nose and palate. Subtle sweetness with spices and wood, but nothing that pops or stands out.

24 Days of Rum 2023, Blue Edition, Day 7 You have to follow the fine aromas on the nose, but it's worth it. On the palate, the muscatel notes of the second maturation. Long, unfortunately only alcoholic finish. Not my kind of rum.
Review by Torsten vom Endt
The 7 just revised... On the whole, not much RUM for the money. Somehow so Lala not really good 😕 There are better ones in terms of taste but also worse ones. I would not recommend it.
Review by Fayaman971
This Panamanian rum is rather average to my taste. First, it is way too sweet, I feel like it has been diluted... Apart from that, it has a strong honey taste and is better used in a cocktail. Worth testing but I wouldn't keep a bottle in my collection.

This rum is pretty light, alcoholic on the nose. It is peppery on the palate with hints of young wood and moscatel finishing. What I don’t like abut this rum is that it’s pretty harsh. Surprisingly, it benefits from adding some sugar. I tried dosing it between 10 and 20 g/l and somewhere around 15 g/l it really shines: the moscatel finishing comes forward and harshness is masked. For the same reason it is good in Rum Old Fashioned.

Nice sample no 7 of the 24 days of rum calendar. 👃 is sharp, alcoholic with soft sweetness. Tongue is much better. Chocolate, fudge, vanilla, caramel. So sweet but still a little hint of alcohol. Medium long finish.
Review by MoMcGurk
I like the natural flavors designation without additives. I wish the moscatel flavoring was a bit stronger, but I did get it. Mixed was OK, but not special.
Review by Mateusz
Sweet, fresh, interesting. Spent 1 year I moscatel cask which is rare. Good balance between freshness and aged rum.
Review by Irbis
It was really good experience but i expected more from mezan. Thin, sweet and strong. Worth to try
Review by Matthias Freynik
Very subtle in smell. Short finish. Little taste of basically nothing.
Review by Eugene227
Remains rather pale despite the Moscatel finish. It feels light and watery, the barrel aging adds some sweetness and spice, but little depth. At 40% ABV, it lacks body, and the alcohol comes across quite sharp in places. Overall, an average rum that's more suited for mixing.
Review by Nat Alie
Lags behind the smell in taste, quite flat and fizzy on the finish.
Review by FelixS
On the nose a restrained rum with a lot of barrel influence. Sweet, honey-like, spicy with lots of black pepper. On the palate with alcoholic sharpness, peppery and slightly spicy, rather thin body, dry character with distinct sweetness from the barrel. Overall not really harmonious.

Ostrá vůně, středně ostrá chuť, alkoholové.

Whatever the moscatel cask did. It should have not done that. This is watery, extremely alcoholic and barren of any flavour. This god forsaken land of rum was not meant to be drank straight. This is not fun.
