HSE Black Sheriff One Shot

Vanilla and fresh oak up front, with grassy, earthy sugarcane underneath — the American bourbon barrel really shows, and a few people first mistook it for whisky. Members call it one of the friendlier ways into agricole, though the common gripe is that it drinks thin and watered-down. The grassy, vegetal side can be a shock if you only know molasses rum.

The community says
  • Easy agricole entry
  • Bourbon-like vanilla wood
  • Keep in mind: Tastes watered down

How does HSE Black Sheriff One Shot taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Bourbon-leaning starter agricole, a bit watery Most see it as an easy first agricole with a bourbon-like vanilla-and-wood profile. The recurring catch: it tastes reduced and watery, so the fruit and body feel light.

On the nose molasses, sugarcane, apricot, vanilla, cinnamon, a bit of oak, as well as glue and menthol. In the glass slightly oily with a light amber tone. On the tongue a watery, soft mouthfeel, with a certain sharpness, oak, vanilla and pepper. On the finish a hint of salt with apricot, oak notes, almond and marzipan.

RumX Advent calendar, 15.12., blind: First impression: Agricole, quite clear, but was very diluted. I'm not going to like it. That's how it actually is. I had already tasted it at the Agricole tasting, 10th GRF, Berlin. There: "It's nothing at all, diluted, tastes artificially flavored... Not for the feint-hearted" Nose: freshly squeezed apple juice at the very beginning, slightly perfumed, dusty dry, old wooden floorboards, but also a slight sweetness with tangerine, vanilla and tobacco. Palate: thin and watered down, some sweet licorice. Slightly tart, herbal, freshly cut branches, watered down sugar syrup. Caraway, cap and aniseed on the finish. Old right flat. A great pity.

It’s a blend of three-to-four-year old rum aged in American oak bourbon barrels It’s quite young and that’s noticeable when it’s coming to the deep in the rum and the powerfulness. Overall I’m getting a little of a whisky feeling, but that’s not bad. I think it’s quite good for being so young.

There is no doubt that this was finished aiming a bit for a bourbon/whisky lover. Fruity and fresh with smoky wood. Definitely a rum for whisky lovers. For the price a very good rum.

I heard that the HSE Black Sheriff is a great start for Agricole Rum, so I bought it. Puuuhh, if you only know molasses rum, this is quite a slap in the face 😆 It tastes very grassy and earthy with a slight sweetness, all very unusual. It took me a long time to get used to it and I don't know if I really need Agricole Rum 😅 But in a caipirinha, it really works well, very refreshing

My expectations were not quite met. You can taste the cask aging and the typical Agricole sweetness is somehow missing overall. The spice note is quite balanced, which means the clear fruitiness is missing, but that’s not really surprising since it comes from the HSE house 😀

Interesting value for money. It's too reduced and very diluted. But it still has a super pleasant woody and vanilla framework, a thousand times better than any spirit substitute rum like Don Papa. Edit: tested as an aperitif and first impression confirmed. Surprisingly sweet though.

Very good entry-level rum into the agricole world. In many ways, sufficiently pleasant and round aromas that provide a delicious experience.

RumXmas #15, blind: Very first scent reminded me of Barbados (vanilla, bourbon), but then the agricole profile opened up with the fresh, grassy en vegetal notes. Alcohol is either not that high or integrated very well, but I would guess around 45%. Bittersweet woody finish. Said it before, so why not again: Saint-James? 😜 Feels a bit watered down, but a nice starter agricole. I think it would make a nice addition in a Mai Tai.

Day 15 RumX Advent calendar: Nose: grassy, herbal, but also somehow fruity, towards red wine. Palate: similar to the nose, but is there even alcohol in it? Seems clearly diluted to me. My (real) guess: diluted Agricole. Not bad, but clearly too watery, which simply means it lacks body.

RumX Advent Calendar 15.12.21: on the nose I had no hint of an Agricole rum. On the palate then unmistakable. I just can't distinguish or recognize the different profiles of the Agricole distilleries. This one is very thin. Still, I'm surprised how a nice complexity comes through. Certainly a good beginner.

I don't like this one at all. It has an unpleasant alcoholic touch. The vanilla notes are pleasantly subtle and very good. The wood is powerful. The aftertaste becomes interesting at some point. Overall, though, it's very angular and not smooth. Better to spend a few euros more and enjoy consciously!

Unfortunately, the HSE is so far the weakest sample in the RX calendar. Intense notes of grass, plant, and wood on the nose. On the palate, rather light with woody hints, leather, fruit, and also a slight sweetness of honey. So it just manages a "good" rating.

My <> rum during my move. Very good for spontaneous old ti punch between packing and transporting boxes. As everyone already knows, agricole rum is by far my favorite style and it's no surprise that I like this cheap agricole even though, to be honest, it's a bum in the world of agricoles. But still, for 25€ at Carrefour I can't complain. But meh, I'm looking forward to being settled in my new apartment where I'll make my big comeback to high-quality (agricole) rums 😋😋🫡

At first you really think you are drinking Bourbon here, but after a while in the glass you recognize again (in a positive way) typical HSE notes. A nice change from the “standard” HSE 55 that I usually use in Ti-Punch.

My RumRatings review from 5 years ago: The rum is very spicy on the nose. Wood and smoke come through. But also sweetness and clearly the vanilla from the bourbon cask. When drinking, the rum is a bit more reserved. Primarily spicy with vanilla and caramel detectable, and the rum is dry. Grassy agricole notes come through. The rum also still shows some sharpness. The body is not yet fully developed and the finish could be longer. Oak and roasted caramel notes linger. The H.S.E. Black Sheriff is a cool mix of agricole and bourbon. It's quite special and more for occasional drinking. The grassy agricole notes are somewhat overpowered by the strong bourbon notes. At about 35 euros, it's affordable and could really be interesting for bourbon fans. Ranked 4th in the Wagemut tasting.

A light, not quite typical Rhum Agricole that reminds more of a Bourbon Whiskey. But you can drink it well neat. I tasted it for the first time at the German Rum Festival and also took it home. I'm curious how it will taste with cola or in a "Whiskey Sour."
