DDL El Dorado 8
Most people land on the same verdict: a recognizable Demerara that's better in a glass with cola than analyzed neat. Expect caramel, brown sugar, molasses and toasted oak, with raisin and vanilla behind it. Sipped straight it reads a little simple and slightly bitter for some, but tasters keep coming back to it as an everyday mixer that punches above its price.

How does DDL El Dorado 8 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Sweet Demerara mixer, simple sipped neat Widely used as an everyday mixing Demerara — sweet caramel, oak and molasses that shine in cola and cocktails. Neat it's fine but a touch simple, and a few find it hot or bitter.

an outstanding rum for cocktails and fruit punch. Pictured here in the Rum Runner. But you can also really enjoy it on its own and for a great price, it's a must-have in my home bar.
Review by abaker-rum
A lot of dark sugars on the nose, maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar with some vanilla. Those notes continue throughout the rum in a very pleasant experience. This would be a versatile rum at its price point for both sipping and cocktails.

All my Tastings and Scores are purely based on “Rums under £50”. I rarely look at Rums over £50 for my YouTube.

Woody, sweet, bitter with a slight alcoholic tingle on the lips. I do not get much more out of it, not mine.

My mixing rum for tiki cocktails.
Review by Decky Hicks Doughty
A typical Guyana rum. Subtle notes of dark chocolate and a bit woody. Makes an acceptable neat sipper.

The 8-year-old could be in the bottle at El Dorado and some people would be stunned.
Review by TheJackDrop
Ahhh.. back to my first loves. El Dorado is really nice. It's clearly a beautiful molasses, relatively lively, a nice burnt sugar, spices, coconut.. in short. Not bad at all!
Review by Jakob Deiner
Rather in the woody, darker direction. Still relatively pleasant and little sharpness. Drinks: - Neat: 3.5/5 - Rum Cola: 4/5 - Rum Mule: 4/5

Dark, broody, rich and full. All-encompassing swooping notes of a mix of spices, chocolate, some kind of coffee, toasted caramel cookie. On the tongue it's quite hot! But not unpleasant. Leans heavily into more darker tasting, with roasted nuts and different spices. Pleasant, short-to medium lingering finish of the same notes. Quite enjoyed this one! A tiny bit too much burn though.
Review by Jasper van den Bovenkamp
Beginning rum drinker here. I found the rum very dry and aggressively biting, almost in a chemical way. Not my thing.
Review by Belias
Not bad, it has its justification as a relatively affordable rum for every day, where a splash of cola is no sin. Not a long-lasting experience but absolutely usable on the side. But I have to say that I probably won't buy a second bottle.

Had only mixed with this and was pleasantly surprised at how it sipped. Sweet caramel and toffee and a hint of oak. I'm guessing this has some amount of dosage but if so it is definitely not over done. I wish the proof was higher but it's convinced me to try the 12 or 15 soon.

Good for Rum & Coke, sweet
Review by M@xiM
Aroma: fresh, sweet reed aroma, peach notes, tropical fruits, non-alcoholic light aroma. Taste: slightly alcoholic, sweet fruity light aroma, vanilla-nutty aftertaste. Light fruity-vanilla aftertaste. Excellent basic light basic Guyanese rum.
Review by Craig Osborne
Overripe Tropical fruit, but driven by toasted sugar notes of roasted marshmallow, clove, & carmelized banana. Fresher fruit tones support this like tart apricot & baked apple, also a touch of apple blossom. With all this said, caramel, demerrara simple syrup & roasted notes are the focus. I bought this a few years back to use in homemade eggnog & it was perfect. Finishes on a toasted meringue & vanilla poaced pear note. Decent sipper, even better mixer.

El Dorado 8yr is a very recognizable Demerara rum—woody, slightly sweet, with hints of chocolate dried fruit and spice. Its an easy, approachable sipper; lighter in profile, maybe a little simple/tame neat, but nonetheless a good starting point for the style. Cocktails are where it really shines; it’s a versatile rum that’s able to hold up on on its own and plays well with other spirits, and it’s a great value to boot.
Review by Mitchell Kennedy
The smell is raisin, caramel, and vanilla. Longer smelling gives more of the dark dried fruits. The taste is some grassy, woody sweetness to start, with caramel and vanilla. The dried fruits and raisin come in. The finish is a bit hot with a hint of dried fruit.
Review by Wesley
An affordable rum that works for both sipping and mixing. A tiny amount of this in a cuba libre is delicious. The price on this (around €20-25 in the netherlands) makes me think this is a great value rum.

In cola, it outdid English Harbor: nice, not too strong whiskey notes: especially malt, caramel. Also some wood and spice. Alcohol not as mild as the 12-year but not harsh.
Review by StormAK
A rum that can be described simply as rum. A bit prickly, but with that very aroma and taste you expect from a simple rum. Quite dry.
Review by Kelly Mason
Strong alcohol after taste. Sweet, oak, caramel, likely better mixed with coke. Hardest El Dorado the sip!
Review by Big Greasy Daddy
Solid rum that is an awesome mixer but I have no problem sipping it. Great value. Full flavored.
Review by MAARTEN
Great for cocktails!
Review by Bowel Emptier
It has a much more roasty and woody flavor than I expected based on the smell. Some pretty heavy vanilla notes. Not the most pleasant to sip but is probably a great mixing rum. I rate it above average just for that fact. Main downside was a slight bitter flavor.
Review by Kieron Wood
This stuff is delicious in the rocks however it really comes into its own when mixed, huge depth of flavour and another classic from eldorado

Read full review ›It may suit someone who enjoys Goslings Black Seal as well due the sweetness in its profile. In short this is a classic Demerara rum. It isn't a replacement for your 12 or 15 year old but it is excellent as a mixing rum for those who enjoy sweeter rum....
