Denizen Merchant's Reserve
Mai Tai builders, this one's aimed squarely at you. It's a blend with real Jamaican funk under fruity, floral notes — banana, tropical fruit, a surprising hit of anise, and a bit of black pepper. Neat, most tasters find it thin and a little hot for 43%, but the funk actually pops brighter in a cocktail. Bought for tiki, does the job well.

- Fruity, floral nose

This rum has earned a reputation for being a tasty addition to tiki cocktails, but I think it also holds its own when enjoyed neat. While it may not boast the same prestige as a high-end rum, it's still a solid choice that won't break the bank. Its flavor profile is complex and interesting, with a hint of funk that's characteristic of Jamaican rums. At this price point, I think it's definitely worth keeping on hand in the bar.

To me this is good neat but mixed it makes the greatest mai tai possible for under $500 lol

The guy in line ahead of me at the store saw my bottle in the checkout line. He warned me that he too was tricked to use this rum in a mai tai. He said that if I wanted any depth to my mai tai, don’t use this. But everyone (to include Martin Cate) uses this for there mai tais. I should have listened to that guy. Not good neat. Too light in mixes.

I don’t love sipping this but it’s enjoyable if it’s what’s on hand. Bought for Mai Tais and it does make a good one. But even behind the other ingredients there is an alcoholoc taste that comes through. That makes it seem “hotter” than it really is at 43%.
Review by BigFlax
A surprising contrast between a fruity and floral nose and a palate with mild funk and even a smoky note. The funky flavor is actually much more highlighted in a cocktail than when sipping this neat; not a great neat rum, though I love it in a Mai Tai.

Scored as a sipper, not as a mixer. Makes a great mai-tai.
