Jamaica Rum

8.3/10 (53,117 reviews)

  • Funk and esters
  • Pot still
  • But: rarely for beginners

No rum is more imitated than Jamaican rum. This is the home of funk, the fruity, overripe-banana intensity that drinkers call hogo, made in the biggest pot stills outside Irish whiskey.

RumX Guide

Jamaica, explained

What makes Jamaican rum different?

Big double-retort pot stills, very long fermentations with dunder and muck, and high ester levels give Jamaican rum its famous fruity funk. Rum has flowed in Jamaica since the 1670s, soon after the British took the island in 1655, and by the 1820s Jamaica was shipping more rum to Britain than all fourteen other British Caribbean colonies combined, over 140 million litres a year. While Guyana and others moved to the column still, Jamaica held on to the pot still, and not a small one: its double-retort pots are the largest outside Irish whiskey.

Both still types are legal for Jamaica Rum today, and Appleton, Clarendon and New Yarmouth all run columns alongside their pots. The pot still is the island's signature, not its only tool.

How does Jamaican rum taste, and what is funk?

Fruity and loud: compared with every other origin in our database, tasters name pineapple, banana and overripe fruit several times more often for Jamaica, alongside notes that sound like a warning and are meant as praise, glue and nail polish. That combination is what the scene calls funk, or hogo, and it is mostly esters, the fruity compounds that long fermentation creates, not any added flavouring.

The taste for it came from 1880s Germany, where blenders bought intensely aromatic Jamaican rum to stretch into Continental rum. Jamaican producers pushed esters higher and higher, until the chemist H.H. Cousins reached levels around 6,000. In 1935 the island capped rum at 1,600 gr/hlAA, a limit the Spirits Pool Association still enforces today.

The Jamaica ladder: where do you start?

Start with an aged estate blend such as Appleton: it is the one step of the ladder where newer and experienced drinkers agree. Jamaican rum is usually described as one taste. The ratings say otherwise: it depends who is holding the glass. We split every Jamaica rating into two groups, drinkers with a handful of ratings on RumX and drinkers with fifty or more, and the gap between them widens the further up the island's styles you go.

By step three, the same bottle can sit a full point apart. That is not a contradiction, it is the point: the two groups are answering different questions. One is asking whether everyone likes this, the other whether it delivers for people who came looking for exactly this.

Median rating per step, split by how many rums the rater has scored on RumX. Beginners have 5 or fewer, connoisseurs 50 or more. n is the number of ratings behind each figure. Data as of 2026-07

Which distilleries make Jamaican rum today?

Jamaica is down to six working distilleries, each with its own voice: Appleton Estate is the famous aged blend, Hampden the funk monster, Worthy Park the clean, modern estate, Clarendon (Monymusk) and Long Pond feed both blends and collectors, and New Yarmouth is the quiet high-ester engine. Drinkers new to the island tend to start with Appleton, then fall down the rabbit hole of vintage Hampden, Long Pond and New Yarmouth.

What are Jamaican rum marques?

Marques are short codes each distillery registers for its distillates, each tied to an ester range from light to heavy, so they tell you roughly how heavy and funky a rum will be. Hampden's DOK sits near the legal ceiling at 1,500 to 1,600, Clarendon's MLC is far gentler, and Worthy Park's WPM is another example. Most rums you drink are blends of several marques, but the single-marque bottlings collectors chase, those letter-and-number codes on the labels of independents like Velier, Distilia and S.B.S., are where Jamaica's character runs purest.

Frequently asked questions about Jamaica

Genuine Jamaica Rum is protected as a Geographical Indication: it must be fermented and distilled from molasses on the island. The GI forbids added sugar, which is part of why the island’s rum tastes so dry and intense.

Wray & Nephew White Overproof, by a wide margin. It is the island’s everyday rum, distilled by New Yarmouth, the phantom behind Wray & Nephew: the distillery almost nobody outside the scene can name.

Rum bottled well above the usual drinking strength, typically 57 percent alcohol and up. In Jamaica the best known example is Wray & Nephew White Overproof at 63 percent. It is mixed far more often than it is sipped neat.

Hampden, Long Pond and New Yarmouth are the three that can reach the legal ceiling of 1,600 gr/hlAA. Of the three, Hampden is the best known for its high-ester marques.

There are currently 1,880 offers for rums from Jamaica across 44 partner shops, including Rum Piraten, delicando, Urban Drinks, Armagnac.de, Bondston, Whiskysite.nl. A 0.7 l bottle starts at 20.08 € incl. shipping. On each product page, offers are sorted by total price including shipping.
