8.4/10 (185 reviews)Trinidad breaks the British-Caribbean mould. It makes clean, column-distilled rum closer to the Spanish style than to the heavy pot-still funk of Jamaica or Guyana, and it is home to Angostura and to Caroni, the most coveted closed distillery in rum.
Twenty-four minutes on Trinidad: why people pay hundreds of euros for a rum that tastes of bicycle tube, how close the last working distillery gets to Caroni, and the ladder from Kraken up to the legends. Spoken in German, with English subtitles.
1,328 bottlings, 328 of them available, prices from 40 partner shops. As of October 2026.

Trinidad, explained
Trinidad rum is clean and column-distilled, closer to the Spanish or continental style than to the heavy pot-still rum of Jamaica and Guyana. Sitting about 11 kilometres off Venezuela, Trinidad has always faced two ways: the Spanish held it until the British took over in 1797, and that mixed heritage shows in the glass. Where its neighbours built their fame on heavy pot stills, Trinidad bet on the column, making a cleaner, lighter rum. It is a mid-sized producer, but a distinctive one.
Only Angostura, through its distillery Trinidad Distillers (TDL). It makes the aged Angostura range, with the 1919 and the 1824 as its best-known bottles, local favourites like Forres Park, White Oak and Royal Oak that fill the island's bars, and large volumes of bulk rum for blenders worldwide. The 20th century turned on three names: Caroni, Fernandes and Angostura. Fernandes gave Trinidad its first vintage rum, the famous 1919, before Angostura absorbed it in 1973, and Caroni closed in the early 2000s. That left TDL as the island's only rum maker.
Caroni made its last rum in the early 2000s and never reopened; the company, Caroni (1975) Ltd, closed on 31 July 2003. Its remaining stock was sold off piecemeal to buyers like Velier, and Caroni remains the most chased closed distillery in rum. Its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like style, carried to the world by Velier, turned a finite warehouse of casks into a collector obsession, and the stock keeps shrinking. For many drinkers, hunting down a Caroni is the deep end of the Trinidad story.
My advice, and this is opinion rather than data: start with an independently bottled TDL, and try the tyre note of Caroni once you are curious. The ladder is not a ranking, it is a map. It sorts Trinidad by budget, from Kraken up to the Caroni legends, with bottles you could buy in October 2026, and asks who is doing the rating: beginners with five rated rums or fewer, connoisseurs with fifty or more. On Kraken the two groups sit a full point apart, and by Caroni beginners hardly show up at all. Both are right, taste shifts with experience.
Almost every step has an alternative. Softer than the 1919 is the Zaya Gran Reserva, stronger than the Planteray 8 the Rum Nation Cask Strength Trinidad 2012 at 53.4 percent. On step four, connoisseurs have the The Bottle Shop Trinidad 2009 at 63.2 percent. For Caroni, the Velier 21 Years and the Velier 17 Years are the classics, and at the very top, next to The Last, sits the Paradise No. 5 from 2000.
