RumX Guide

Appleton Estate, explained

What is the difference between the Appletons, from Signature to 21 Year?

The Signature Blend and the 8 Year are the everyday entry points, the Reserve, 12 and 15 add age, and the 21 Year is the prized top of the range. The RumX community tastes the Signature as fruity with caramel and honey, the Reserve with banana, caramel and vanilla, the 12 Year woodier with vanilla and oak, and the 21 Year with oak, vanilla, spice and dark chocolate. For collectors there is the cask-strength vintage rum of the Velier Appleton Hearts Collection, plus old Appleton Reserve and 20 Year bottlings: the distillery behind a supermarket staple also makes collectors' rum. Start with the Signature or the 8 Year, and move to the 12 or the 21 Year when you want more oak.

What does Appleton rum taste like?

Appleton's house style is a polished, fruity funk with a signature orange-peel note, gentler than the wild funk of Hampden. The distillery credits that orange peel to its own cane and water. Appleton sits in Jamaica's St. Elizabeth parish, tucked behind the Cockpit Country, a strange limestone karst of cone-shaped hills found almost nowhere else. The estate grows its own cane and draws water from a striking turquoise spring filtered through that limestone.

Is Appleton a pot still rum?

Partly: every Appleton is a blend of pot-still and column-still rum. Five huge Forsyths double-retort copper pot stills run alongside column stills in one stillhouse. Unusually for a heavy-rum island, Appleton uses no dunder and a short 36-hour fermentation, which is why its rum is cleaner than the heaviest Jamaican rum. The blends age in ex-bourbon casks across the company's many Jamaican warehouses.

Who owns Appleton Estate?

Italy's Gruppo Campari, through J. Wray & Nephew: Campari bought the company in 2012, after a long chain of owners. Rum has been distilled at Appleton since at least 1709, with the brand citing 1749 as its founding. The company's story starts in 1825, when the publican John Wray bought the Shakespeare Tavern in Kingston and began blending estate rum. His nephew C.J. Ward joined in 1860, giving us J. Wray & Nephew, whose long-gone Wray & Nephew 17 was the rum in the original 1944 Mai Tai. The first rum to carry the Appleton Estate name appeared around 1944.
