RumX Guide
Hampden, explained
DOK is Hampden's highest-ester marque, at 1,500 to 1,600 gr/hlAA, the legal ceiling and among the highest-ester rums in the world. The initials belong to Dermot Owen Kelly-Lawson, an early-1900s owner buried on the estate. DOK is one of seven marques Hampden makes, each coded by ester level. Using the retort lees, Hampden can push the old Cousins process to extreme levels around 5,000, kept for blending, not bottling neat.
Rum Fire is Hampden's unaged overproof white at 63 percent, Hampden Estate the aged range, launched in 2018 in partnership with La Maison & Velier. The RumX community tastes Rum Fire as intense, estery and funky with pineapple, and the Hampden Estate 8 Year as estery with banana, spice and tropical fruit. Both came late: for most of its life Hampden sold unaged rum in bulk to brokers like E&A Scheer, and you have tasted it in blends such as Smith & Cross. The Husseys changed that, first with Rum Fire, then with proper ageing, and each marque is still aged separately before blending. Until then, aged Hampden came only from independent bottlers. The entry points are the 8 Year, the Gold and Rum Fire; if you want to go further, independents like Distilia, Samaroli and Rum Artesanal bottle aged vintage single-marque Hampden.
Hampden's funk is built, not added: airborne wild yeast, very long open-air fermentation, unpasteurised molasses, dunder, muck and cane acid all push the ester levels sky high, and nothing is added after distillation. Fermentation runs in open-air cedar vats, in a hall whose walls are deliberately left coated in dark mould, because power-washing it would kill the terroir. The bacterial fermentation in the muck pit can add another two weeks before the still ever runs.
Hampden has made rum in the Queen of Spain Valley since 1753, and of all Jamaica's distilleries it is the closest to how it looked a century or more ago. It is batch-only, with no column still, and makes around 1.4 million litres of pure alcohol a year.
