Long Pond

Long Pond is Trelawny's other funk legend. Founded in 1753 like its neighbour Hampden, it makes some of the highest-ester rum in Jamaica, yet for most of its life it sold everything in bulk. Collectors built its reputation through independent bottlings long before Long Pond released a rum under its own name in 2021.

The RumX Guide to Long Pond

A Trelawny twin to Hampden

Long Pond shares both a birth year and a parish with Hampden: 1753, in Trelawny, the corner of Jamaica famous for high-ester rum. There is a neat twist in the ownership: the Hussey family that owns Hampden also owns Long Pond's sugar factory, but not the distillery itself, which belongs to National Rums of Jamaica. Long Pond is now batch-only, after its column still was wrecked around 2010.

From Bowmore's owners to Captain Morgan

By 1881 Long Pond belonged to J.B. Sherriff & Co., Scottish blenders who also owned the Bowmore whisky distillery on Islay, and who exported their unusual rum straight to Glasgow. Seagram's bought the estate in 1953, using its rum for the early Captain Morgan. One absorbed neighbour, Vale Royal, lives on today as Long Pond's VRW marque. The government took over in 1977 and folded it into National Rums of Jamaica in 1980.

Marques: from LRM to TECA

Long Pond runs the full ester ladder. The lightest marque, LRM, sits at 50 to 90, still heavier than most rum from other countries. The heavy TEC marques, like TECA and TECC, climb to the 1,500 to 1,600 ceiling, made with cane acid, dunder, muck and airborne yeast over fermentations lasting weeks. Light rum uses molasses alone over 40 hours. The lost CRV marque, from the destroyed column, now survives only in old independent bottlings.

Fire, restart and a first brand

Long Pond has had a rough run. It could not distil between 2012 and 2017 while it reworked its dunder handling, then, a year after restarting, a cane-field fire jumped to the distillery and destroyed the entire fermentation house and its vats. It limped back in 2019 with new vats. In 2021 NRJ finally launched a Long Pond brand, a 15 year ITP marque, the first rum it had ever sold under its own name. Ageing happens off-site at Innswood.

Most popular vs highest rated

On RumX, Long Pond's reputation is almost entirely an independent-bottler story: over 300 bottles and thousands of ratings, with very few from the distillery itself. The cult favourite is Habitation Velier Long Pond TECA 2005, around 9.1/10, alongside aged Distilia vintages that reach 9.3/10. If you want to understand Trelawny funk beyond Hampden, the rails above are where to look.

Frequently Asked Questions about Long Pond

No, but they are close. Both were founded in 1753 in Trelawny and both make high-ester rum. The Hussey family that owns Hampden owns Long Pond’s sugar factory, but the Long Pond distillery belongs to National Rums of Jamaica.

They run from the light LRM (50 to 90 esters) through VRW and STCE up to the heavy TEC marques like TECA and TECC, which reach the legal ceiling of 1,500 to 1,600. ITP is the first marque sold under the Long Pond brand.

A cult independent bottling of Long Pond’s high-ester TECA marque. The 2005 vintage sits around 9.1/10 on RumX and is one of the rums that made Long Pond famous with collectors.

The Long Pond distillery is owned by National Rums of Jamaica. The neighbouring sugar factory is a separate business owned by the Hussey family of Hampden.

Only since 2021, when it released a 15 year ITP marque. Before that, aged Long Pond came almost entirely from independent bottlers, which is why most of its highly rated rum carries another company’s label.
