RumX Guide
Long Pond, explained
Long Pond runs the full ester ladder, from the light LRM at 50 to 90 esters up to the heavy TEC marques such as TECA and TECC, which climb to the 1,500 to 1,600 ceiling. Even LRM is heavier than most rum from other countries. In between sit marques such as VRW, in which Vale Royal, an absorbed neighbour, lives on, and STCE, and ITP is the first marque sold under the Long Pond name. Heavy rum is made with cane acid, dunder, muck and airborne yeast over fermentations lasting weeks, light rum with molasses alone over 40 hours. The lost CRV marque came from the column still that was wrecked around 2010; it survives only in old independent bottlings, and Long Pond has been batch-only since.
Only since 2021, when National Rums of Jamaica launched a 15 year ITP, the first rum Long Pond ever sold under its own name. Before that, aged Long Pond came almost entirely from independent bottlers, so its reputation is an independent-bottler story: the cult favourite is the Habitation Velier Long Pond TECA 2005, which the RumX community describes as complex, estery and heavy with tropical fruit and glue, alongside aged Distilia vintages. The brand also came after a rough run. Long Pond could not distil between 2012 and 2017 while it reworked its dunder handling; a year after restarting, a cane-field fire jumped to the distillery and destroyed the entire fermentation house and its vats, and it limped back in 2019 with new vats. Ageing happens off-site at Innswood.
The Long Pond distillery belongs to National Rums of Jamaica, while the sugar factory next to it is a separate business of the Hussey family, which also owns Hampden. The road there ran through whisky: by 1881 Long Pond belonged to J.B. Sherriff & Co., Scottish blenders who also owned the Bowmore whisky distillery on Islay and exported their unusual rum straight to Glasgow. Seagram's bought the estate in 1953, using its rum for the early Captain Morgan. The government took over in 1977 and folded it into National Rums of Jamaica in 1980.
