The RumX Guide to Mount Gay

The oldest name in rum

A deed of sale from 1703 lists "two stone windmills, one boiling house with seven coppers, and one still house." That is proof rum was being made on this land more than 320 years ago. The continuous heritage is why many drinkers treat Mount Gay as the home of rum.

From Mount Gilboa to Mount Gay

The estate was first called Mount Gilboa. It was renamed for Sir John Gay Alleyne, the manager who ran the distillery in the 1700s. "Gay" was chosen because a "Mount Alleyne" already existed, and the name has been on the bottle ever since.

The Ward era and the Rémy chapter

For most of the 20th century Mount Gay was shaped by the Ward family, who bought the estate in 1918 and built it into an international brand. In 2014 Rémy Cointreau took full control and has invested heavily since: reviving a 1940s copper Coffey still, planting estate cane, and opening a visitor centre in St. Lucy.

How Mount Gay makes its rum

Mount Gay blends pot-still and column-still rum, the classic Bajan formula. Molasses (over half from the estate's own cane) is fermented and distilled on four double-retort pot stills and a copper Coffey column, then aged in the tropical heat, mostly in ex-bourbon barrels. The two distillates mature separately and the master blender marries them.

The range, read through the data

Mount Gay's scores tell a clear story. Start with Eclipse to learn the house style, step up to XO for depth, then find where the distillery really shines: the limited Master Blender Collection and the Velier-bottled Last Ward, which the RumX community rates among the best Barbados has to offer. One distillery, a full path from first pour to collector's shelf.
