RumX Guide

Mount Gay, explained

What is the difference between Eclipse, Black Barrel and XO?

Eclipse is the light, mixable everyday rum, Black Barrel is bolder and double-matured, and XO is the older, richer sipping expression. The RumX community describes Eclipse as light, with vanilla and caramel, and the XO as round, with vanilla, caramel, oak and dark chocolate. Start with Eclipse to learn the house style, step up to the XO for depth, and then look at the limited Master Blender Collection and the Velier-bottled Last Ward, which the community finds herbal and minty. One distillery, a full path from first pour to collector's shelf.

What type of rum is Mount Gay?

Mount Gay is a classic Barbados blend of pot-still and column-still rum, made from molasses. The molasses is fermented and distilled on four double-retort pot stills and a copper Coffey column, then aged in the tropical heat, mostly in ex-bourbon barrels. The two distillates mature separately and the master blender marries them. For 2019/20, Mount Gay put the share of its molasses from Barbados, its own fields included, at around 20%.

Is Mount Gay the oldest rum in the world?

Mount Gay is the oldest documented rum distillery site still at work: a deed of sale from 1703 lists "two stone windmills, one boiling house with seven coppers, and one still house" on the estate. That is proof rum was being made on this land more than 320 years ago, and that long heritage is why many people treat Mount Gay as the home of rum. The brand itself is younger than the site: Eclipse, the everyday bottle, goes back to 1910.

Who owns Mount Gay?

Rémy Cointreau has owned the Mount Gay brand since 1989 and the distillery since 2014. For most of the 20th century the estate was shaped by the Ward family, who bought it in 1918 and built it into an international brand. In recent years Rémy has invested heavily, reviving a 1940s copper Coffey still and planting estate cane.

Why is it called Mount Gay?

Mount Gay is named after Sir John Gay Alleyne, the manager who ran the distillery in the 1700s: the estate, first called Mount Gilboa, was renamed for him in 1801. "Gay" was chosen because a "Mount Alleyne" already existed, and the name is still on every bottle today.
