New Yarmouth

New Yarmouth is Jamaican rum's best-kept secret. There are almost no photos of it, it makes Wray & Nephew White, the island's best-selling rum, and it is one of only three distilleries that can reach the highest esters. Collectors only really discovered it through aged 1994 vintages, which have become some of the most surprising rums on RumX.

The RumX Guide to New Yarmouth

The enigma of Clarendon

New Yarmouth sits in Clarendon parish and, despite making rum since at least 1817, it is the most mysterious distillery in Jamaica. The current plant dates to 1948, and like Appleton Estate it belongs to J. Wray & Nephew, now owned by Gruppo Campari. Where Appleton is the polished public face, New Yarmouth is its near-invisible sister, the yin to Appleton's tourist-friendly yang.

The engine behind Wray & Nephew White

If you have had a rum punch in Jamaica, you have probably had New Yarmouth. It is the main source of Wray & Nephew White Overproof, the island's best-selling rum by a distance, along with local whites like Coruba and Charley's J.B. One source puts its annual output in the same range as Appleton, which would make this quiet distillery one of the largest producers on the island.

Built on secondhand stills

New Yarmouth has a charming habit of buying other distilleries' cast-offs. Its 1948 restart used four small pot stills from closed distilleries, it took a used Coffey column from Appleton around 1970, added another column in the 1990s, and installed a new multicolumn still after the Campari era began. So it runs both pot and column, an unusually patchwork stillhouse stitched together from Jamaica's rum history.

A high-ester program seeded by Hampden

New Yarmouth is one of only three Jamaican distilleries, with Hampden and Long Pond, that can reach the very highest ester levels. That capability arrived in the mid-1990s, and tellingly it was guided by Winston Kennedy, a former distillery manager at Hampden. Its NYE marque is the one collectors hunt, and unlike most of Jamaica it is willing to use muck.

Most popular vs highest rated

For a distillery so far off the map, New Yarmouth scores remarkably well on RumX. There is no official aged range, so its top bottles are all aged single-marque rum from independents like S.B.S, Rum Artesanal and Swell de Spirits, especially the 1994 NYE vintages, which sit around 9/10. It is the classic Jamaican plot twist: an anonymous overproof workhorse hiding world-class vintage rum.
